Japanese WWW Sites

The following list has been taken from the April 1995 edition of SunWorld, and has been provided by Maynard Hogg.

Note that the list comes with certain provisos:

* The bulk of the text is in Japanese. (Major exception: sunsite)

* As of February 10, when the issue went to press, many of these are experimental system featuring not much beyond the (inevitable) corporate outline.

SITE LIST

ASCII. This site offers a corporate outline and a guide to ASCIINET, the company's on-line service.

ASTEC. This site offers a corporate outline, map to offices, product information, exhibition and seminar announcements.

Atom. The design company Atom specializes in computer graphics animation. This site offers a rich lineup of company information, a Virtual Gallery containing image data, the electronic edition of Mac Life magazine, a music archive, and the Voyager home page.

Chuo Electronics. This site offers a corporate outline, product information, and information from the Hachioji area.

Daiwa Institute of Research. This site offers a corporate outline, research reports, introductions to such company products and services as its comprehensive personnel management system and asset management packages, Japanese and Asian economic data, and stock information.

Dentsu International Information Service.This site offers a corporate outline and links to SPARC Unix home pages for information on SPARC Unix seminars and exhibitions.

Digital Equipment Japan. This site offers technical documentation for OpenGL, X, Ultrix, DEC OSF/1, and OpenVMS plus an archive of Alpha AXP freeware. A fun feature are guides to the Ogikubo neighborhood in which its headquarters are located--Chinese noodle shops, restaurants, and maps, for example.

Digital Technology. This site offers a corporate outline and other information.

Forval Creative. This site, among other services, introduces the company's workstation management software Chameleon.

Fuji Xerox. This site offers a corporate outline and links to other systems--the WIDE project, NTT, and the National Cancer Center, for example.

Fujitsu. This site offers a corporate outline, product descriptions, news releases, and guides to company research and development activities, publications, and events. On-line shopping for Fujitsu products is also available.

Future Pirates. This site features images and videos which Tsuyoshi Takagi, the multimedia creator who founded the company, helped create.

G Search. This site provides on-line shopping for package software, with descriptions and free demo versions available for downloading. Purchasing requires a membership application, but the membership itself is free.

Hankyu Electric Railway. This site offers a corporate outline, train information, and a guide to site along the company's rail lines.

Hitachi. This site offers a corporate outline, product descriptions, information from Hitachi Group members, and pages devoted to research and development and specialized information.

Hitachi Software Engineering. This site offers a corporate outline, catalog of systems and personal computers manufactured and sold by the company, and new product descriptions.

Impress. This site offers an on-line database of this publisher's books, the on-line edition of Internet Magazine, and a catalog of WWW servers throughout Japan with access links to the major ones.

KDD Labs. This site offers a corporate outline and a map of international undersea communications cables. The "Hello Japan" menu item introduces Japanese festivals and traditional handicrafts.

Matsushita Electric Industrial. This site offers a corporate outline, product information, and announcements of company-sponsored events.

Mitsubishi Research Institute. This site offers a corporate outline, reports on Institute research activities, seminar announcements, a guide to recent publications, and links to other WWW servers.

Mu. The company calls its Internet service SDI-NET. It offers such commercial services as machine translation, patent data, and on-line shopping. Its "High-Tech Shower" page provides access to international technical news.

NEC. This site offers a corporate outline, product information, service guide, and reports on research activities. It also offers links to American servers providing English-language information to NEC customers in North American markets.

Net One Systems This site offers a corporate outline, product descriptions, and an index to Internet resources.

Nichigai Associates. This site offers a corporate outline, information on its electronic book lineup, and a public library guide. The company provides on-line services and publishes dictionaries, CD-ROMs, and electronic books.

Nihon Cisco Systems. This site offers product information, the company's in-house magazine The Packet, and on-line press releases.

Nissan Motors. Nissan calls its server RASHEEN (from Japanese rashinban). This site, rented from Sony, is dedicated to the company's 4WD compact station wagon of the same name.

Nomura Research Institute. This site offers a corporate outline, a guide to corporate publications, and papers and reports by its researchers.

Novell. This site offers company and product information, a technical support database with answers to the most frequently asked questions about Novell products, and a map to other servers on the Novell on-line information service network. There are also links to such Novell WWW servers overseas as the NetWare 4.1 server.

NTT. This site's "What's New?" page offers access to a URL catalog and the latest WWW developments. A section offering information on Japan features a guide to tourist spots in Japan, complete with color photographs.

NTT Learning Systems. This site offers photographs and other materials from the NTT Media Lab, information on Japan for foreign users, and, via the Entertainment section, a link to Kubota's home page.

Omron Data General. This site offers a corporate outline, event guide, user support, etc.

Port Net Service. This site offers a database containing specifications of all past workstations and personal computers, catalogs of Sun and Sony products, and a rental server offering links to corporate home pages for the likes of Sanuki noodle shop Yamadaya, Star Shokudo specializing in Yokohama culinary delights, the Yoshitsune-yaki Festival in Yonezawa, Fukushima, and JGC Information Systems.

Shima Media Network. Features news items and photographs from this organization.

Software Research Associates (SRA). Company information uses a fun interface using a bus and bus stop metaphor. This site offers a product information, product support, prerelease information, seminar announcements, and guide to related books. A gallery displays designs used on the company's past New Year's and summer greetings postcards.

Sony Computer Science Labs. This site offers a corporate outline, list of company research projects, information on papers, and other materials describing company activities and research interests. There are also hobby pages.

Sony. This site is dedicated to Sony's NEWS workstations, covering product descriptions, publicity materials, and related events. The Info Plaza section rents WWW server space to other companies--for Nissan's Rasheen, for example.

Soum. This site offers a corporate outline, personnel profiles complete with photographs, a map of the company's neighborhood, and the Mito Museum of Fine Arts home page. Services offered include technical translation materials, products, network and computer room construction services, and consulting.

Stellar Craft. The company calls its commercial Internet services NetBiz. It constructs home pages for other companies--Nextstep specialists NeXTrading and distiller Suntory, for example.

Sun Microsystems Japan. This site offers a corporate outline, product descriptions, research and development reports. The company also provides the equipment for the Science University of Tokyo's Sun SITE server, which provide information to Sun users around the world.

Toyo Engineering. This site offers a corporate outline, introductions to business areas, and progress reports from the company's next-generation production systems development efforts. The Chiba Information section offers a calendar of Makuhari Messe events plus guides to hotels and restaurants in the vicinity.

Yokogawa Electric. This site offers a corporate outline, product information, and news. Product descriptions include color photographs.
