(comment)	The word could also be interpreted as any blade that fits inside the hand, and shuriken were actually used not only as throwing weapons but as easily concealable weapons held in the hand and used for striking and even parrying. There was an endless variety of shapes, sometimes they were quickly improvised from whatever 
material at hand and 'shuriken' does not yet discriminate between different types. A more exact definition could be "small throwing blade" or "small edged weapon often used for throwing" or somesuch.
