I was reading a story about the theft of an ostrich:
"埼玉・熊谷市の障害者福祉施設の敷地内で飼育していたダチョウ1羽が盗まれる(6/14 23:39)" from http://www.fnn-news.com/
and wasn't familiar with the place names and a few other words, so I pasted the whole headline and got the proposed translation for ダチョウ:
* ダチ asshole buddy; chum buddy; GA 
I almost fell out of my chair...
You do have of course:
駝鳥; 鴕鳥 【だちょう】 (n) ostrich [G][GI][S] [G][GI][S] 
but, according to google, the katakana version is more common that both the kanji versions and the hiragana version put together.
