(comment)	As explained in the references, 若番 is actually an abbreviation of 若い番号. On the whole, the clumsier English equivalent would seem to prefer to use the plural, hence the (s) in the "meanings" entry.
It's clearly an engineers' term, and it was in an engineering specification that I found it. 
If it turns out that WWWJDIC already has this, I'll eat my browser (to punish it for failing to search properly).
