New Entries/Amendments for 2005-May-20.html

======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 01:24:18 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	デッドエンド
(pos)	noun
(english1)	dead end
(english2)	tragic ending
(reference)	倉田英之, _R.O.D_ (集英社: 2000) p.143:
「君の作品はハッピーエンドばかりだ……。それはそれで美しいが、デッドエンドもたまには読んでみたい」
(comment)	A デッドエンド in the second sense is a special case of a バッドエンド, distinguished by the death of one or more major characters. This sense doesn't appear to be in any dictionaries yet, but it's amply attested in print and on the web.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 02:23:55 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	諫める
(headw2)	諌める
(kana1)	いさめる
(pos)	v1
(english1)	to remonstrate
(english2)	to warn not to do something
(comment)	The only amendment suggested is the addition of the kanji 諌. This appears to be considerably commoner than the 諫 used in the existing entry (~5:1 on Google), and should probably be the main headword.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 02:30:23 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	おちょくる
(pos)	v5r
(english1)	to tease
(reference)	GG5 glosses "tease sb in jest; pull sb's leg; make fun of sb."
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 02:37:29 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	約束
(kana1)	やくそく
(pos)	vs, n
(english1)	arrangement
(english2)	promise
(english3)	convention
(reference)	"Convention, rule" is sense 2 in GG5.
(comment)	The honorific お約束 also seems to have the additional nuance of "cliched convention" (see the last example in GG5 s.v. 約束 sense 2). The デイリー新語辞典 gives this a separate headword; I'm not sure how JMDict would normally handle this case.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 02:43:18 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	オルゴール
(pos)	noun
(english1)	music box
(reference)	See GG5, 大辞林, etc.
(comment)	The old gloss "organ" is correct for Dutch, but not apparently for Japanese.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 02:48:47 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	ギプス
(pos)	noun
(english1)	gypsum
(english2)	plaster-of-paris
(english3)	plaster cast
(reference)	See GG5 for the additional senses. They're already in the life-sciences dictionary, but probably deserve promotion to EDICT.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 02:59:32 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	くぐもる
(pos)	v5r
(english1)	to mutter
(english2)	(of a sound) to be muffled
(reference)	In GG5 as "mumble, mutter".
(comment)	The second gloss may be redundant, but it seems helpful to explain common usages like 「くぐもったベルの音が寝ぼけた頭に響く」 (Kanon 90.15).
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 03:06:17 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	クロス
(pos)	noun
(english1)	cross
(english2)	gross
(english3)	cloth
(reference)	The example sentence linked from WWWJDIC uses the additional meaning "cloth". This meaning is also in GG5, 大辞林, etc.
(comment)	I can't find any references for or examples of クロス meaning "gross", and that _isn't_ in any of the aforementioned dictionaries; maybe that meaning needs double-checking?
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 03:09:50 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	瑣末
(headw2)	些末
(kana1)	さまつ
(pos)	adj-na,n
(english1)	trivial
(english2)	trifling
(comment)	The alternative kanji 些末 are present in GG5 etc; Google shows them to be only slightly less common than 瑣末.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 03:13:23 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	しおらしい
(pos)	adj
(english1)	meek
(english2)	demure
(english3)	sweet
(reference)	In GG5 etc.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 03:18:04 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	柴漬け
(kana1)	しばづけ
(pos)	noun
(english1)	salted chopped pickled vegetables
(reference)	In GG5 ("assorted vegetables sliced up and pickled in salt with red shiso").
(comment)	Possibly slightly more common in kana.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 03:21:20 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	白々しい
(headw2)	白白しい
(kana1)	しらじらしい
(pos)	adj
(english1)	barefaced, transparent (lie)
(english2)	pure white
(english3)	very clear
(reference)	The new sense (the first one above) is the only one given in GG5.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 04:02:15 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	せせらぐ
(pos)	v5g
(english1)	(of a stream) to babble
(reference)	In 大辞林 with the gloss "水が浅瀬を小さい音を立てて流れる". GG5 only has the derivative noun せせらぎ, which also appears in the riverwater glossary in WWWJDIC, but not in EDICT.
(comment)	Apparently archaic; the noun is much commoner. However, the verb does appear in modern texts, e.g. 麻枝准 et al., _AIR_ (VisualArts: 2000), s.232: 「川のせせらぐ音が聞こえる」
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 04:09:14 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	先決
(kana1)	せんけつ
(pos)	n, vs
(english1)	previous decision
(english2)	priority
(reference)	For usage with the sense "priority" see e.g. 「病気を治すことが先決だと思うけど」 (Kanon 160.750), 「今は、米屋に行くことが何よりも先決だった」 (AIR 250.60).
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 06:08:11 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	テンキー
(pos)	noun
(english1)	numeric keypad
(reference)	In GG5.
(comment)	EDICT currently has the gloss "ten key", which is not particularly helpful. The longer form テンキーパッド is glossed correctly in compdic, but with about 250,000 Google hits the word probably does belong in the main dictionary.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 06:16:08 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	独断
(kana1)	どくだん
(pos)	n, adj-no, adv
(english1)	one's own judgement
(english2)	arbitrary
(english3)	dogmatic
(reference)	In GG5.
(comment)	The current gloss has "one's own judgment" twice for some reason. This version would replace one of those with the additional sense "dogmatism" (see GG5), and mark the adjectival use explicitly (the current gloss is already half adjectival).
The separate EDICT entry for 独断に seems superfluous, as it is a perfectly regular formation. The same goes for 独断的に in compdic.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 06:30:56 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	とろん
(pos)	adverb?
(english1)	(of eyes, actions, etc.) appearing drowsy or intoxicated
(reference)	「どこか間延びした女の子の口調と、とろんとした仕草。」 (Kanon 50.28)
Present in GG5, 大辞林 etc. with slightly restrictive glosses.
(comment)	Usually (always?) used with と, and most commonly with とする. とろんとする would be much easier to gloss...
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 06:43:49 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	乗っける
(headw2)	載っける
(kana1)	のっける
(pos)	v1
(english1)	to place (something) on (something)
(reference)	In GG5, 大辞林, etc.
「最近は[カラス]を肩に乗っけるのが流行ってるのか」 (AIR 183.741)
(comment)	A colloquial equivalent of 乗せる, so maybe it should be added to that entry rather than given one of its own, if it's possible to do that.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 06:53:34 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	這い蹲る
(headw2)	這い蹲う
(kana1)	はいつくばる
(kana2)	はいつくばう
(pos)	v5
(english1)	to grovel
(reference)	In GG5, 大辞林, etc.
「椅子から尻をずらし、床に這いつくばる」 (Clannad 4422)
(comment)	The -る version seems to be more common, though the -う version is given priority in GG5.
This form doesn't have a way to indicate relationships between readings and headwords, but it should be obvious how they match up here. ;)
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:06:55 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	庇
(kana1)	ひさし
(pos)	noun
(english1)	eave
(english2)	visor
(reference)	In GG5 etc.
「昨日の場所は完全に雪に埋もれているので、ドアのひさしの下で食べる。」 (Kanon 130.613)
(comment)	Possibly more common as kana - but it's impractical to get meaningful statistics from any corpora because of the interference from 庇う and the likes of ひさしぶり.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:09:43 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	拉ぐ
(kana1)	ひしぐ
(pos)	v5g, vt
(english1)	to crush
(reference)	In GG5 etc.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:13:59 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	拉げる
(kana1)	ひしげる
(pos)	v1, vi
(english1)	to be crushed
(english2)	to be discouraged
(reference)	In GG5 etc.
(comment)	This and its transitive counterpart 拉ぐ also seem to be missing from the list of transitive/intransitive pairs (ti_list.html).
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:20:45 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	振り絞る
(kana1)	ふりしぼる
(pos)	v5r
(english1)	to muster (one's strength)
(english2)	to strain (one's voice)
(reference)	In GG5 etc.
「身を振り絞るような懇願。」 (AIR 703.165)
(comment)	The present gloss is misleading - it appears to be based on a misreading of GG's entry.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:31:38 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	マグカップ
(pos)	noun
(english1)	a mug
(reference)	In GG5 etc.
(comment)	WWWJDIC picks this up when "the_lot" is selected, but with nearly 700,000 hits on Google, it really belongs in the main dictionary.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:39:35 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	申し訳なさそう
(kana1)	もうしわけなさそう
(pos)	adj-na
(english1)	apologetic
(reference)	In GG5 s.v. 申し訳ない.
「申し訳なさそうに声を落とす」 (Kanon 180.606)
(comment)	The meaning cannot easily be derived from the definition of 申し訳ない, so a separate entry seems justifiable.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:46:21 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	amend
(headw1)	薬品
(kana1)	やくひん
(pos)	noun
(english1)	medicine
(english2)	chemicals
(comment)	The present gloss "medicine(s), chemical(s)" causes problems with tools like JWPce which mistake the (s) for a surname code.
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 07:58:36 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	異界
(kana1)	いかい
(pos)	noun
(english1)	spirit world
(english2)	underworld
(english3)	the next world
(reference)	In GG5, 大辞林, etc.
「異界の神の力は死せる民を異形の怪物に変え[る]...ものであった」 ("Dark Law", prologue)
======= Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 23:54:55 +1000 (EST)
(subtype)	new
(headw1)	東京海洋大学
(kana1)	とうきょうかいようだいがく
(pos)	noun
(english1)	Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
