証拠金 is never used to mean: a deposit; guarantee money. 
I know because I paid 100 man on my house in Takatsuki. What is used -- actually used and not what is listed in stale dictionaries composed by stale people is: 保証金
Sidelight: One of the reasons I never went to a Japanese language school is that I noticed the graduates had been taught to speak like polite foreign clowns. Real life, newspapers and TV all composed for the Japanese do not lie. Dictionaries do lie.

Not demarcated as an important, high frequency expression (only one reading) but nevertheless is. One reason I look at the example sentences is to see the number listed. When the number numbers only one as in the prior example, I am necessarily suspect of its "actual" usage.
