Very poor "definition". Should read "appealing to the general public".
Interesting Sidelight: This reminds me of the Latin "vulga" which simply meant the masses or general public but has become pejorative over time to mean now "vulgar". Somehow I strongly feel anything with 俗 is also pejorative.
