Can't we do better at describing than telling what something is not. I know that 擬音語 is like gata-gata michi or gara-gara hebi. I would say that 擬態語, and I forget the original rendering I learned as I usually do with most vocabulary as I later render from the many contexts I have experienced, would be different from onomatopoeia in that 擬態語 is man's attempt to make a sound of something that does not make a sound. OK, tell me that's no help and I will have to agree.
