New Entries/Amendments for 2006-Aug-31.html

(pos1)	n
(english1)	tote bag
(comment)	The only amendment proposed is the addition of the alternative headword トートバック, with devoiced final mora. My reason for assuming this is a variant rather than a typo is based on Google, which gives the ratio of グ:ク as just 4:1, making it rather too common to be considered strictly incorrect.

(pos1)	n
(comment)	約束を違える 【やくそくをちがえる】 (exp) to break a promise
It might be Kansai-ben but all I ever heard and used for "break a promise" was 約束をやぶれる, sometimes simply

(pos1)	n
(comment)	ばらす (v5s,vt) (1) to expose; to lay open (e.g., secret); (2) to take to pieces; (3) to kill; to murder
For "expose, etc. (a secret)" but nothing else included in the rendering ばらす is very, very common and might deserve a P. Now, I know you fellows will rebut by quoting countless sources written by fuddy-duddy old men in smoke-filled rooms so I am fully prepared to return to my fetal position in the corner and lick my wounds.

(comment)	友達感覚 【ともだちかんかく】 (n) relationship that is like that of friends
I would change the rendering to "feeling like friends; the feeling of friendship"

Although the Japanese hate to say this as it is socially embarrassing, I have heard it used when a relationship was completely rupted: 中が悪い

(headw1)	婉曲
(kana1)	えんきょく
(pos1)	n
(comment)	婉曲 【えんきょく】 (adj-na,n) euphemistic; circumlocution; roundabout; indirect; insinuating
I really, really do not like the inclusion of "insinuation" in the rendering as it connotes a sneakiness. 婉曲方 instead represents a very fundament in Japanese communication. Here, for example, is what I added to my list:
仲がいい なかがいい naka ga ii = close; intimate
仲が悪い なかがわるい naka ga warui = Note: This indicates the relationship is completely rupted, a situation which in confrontation-avoidance Japan is to be avoided at all costs. One argument, no matter how inconsequential by Western standards, rupts a relationship, with even a close friend in Japan.

(pos1)	n
Oh boy, how I hate inconsistency! Please rationalize the following, attending to the first choice Kanji:
1) 聞き馴れる
2) 住み慣れる
3) 使い慣れる
4) 人馴れる
Hey, what can I say. I saw first hand how bad the Kanji knowledge of the Kyoto University students was. Perhaps they take refuge in this chaos. I do not.
