(comment) I don't have strong references for this because this word ins't used that much in Japan, but a song from singer Hitomi Shimatani is called 春待人 (はる まちびと), and in the TV spot of the single a voice says clearly "まちびと").
"春待人" means "Person who waits for spring" or something like that, and 待 + 人 became one word, from "まち ひと" changes to "まちびと".
