(reference) Mitsuya Cider, Pine Cider, etc., all label their products "Cider," when in reality almost none of them have anything to do with fruit, let alone apples. Mitsuya in particular is pretty much just Sprite. The funniest example is probably Mitsuya Shiroi Cider. The tagline on the bottle is, "Cider Meets Condensed Milk." No relevance to actual cider can even really be pretended in this case.
(comment) This can be seen on any number of Japanese soft drinks; in fact, the word サイダー seems to be rarely used in other contexts. I had a conversation with a Japanese man who was convinced that "cider" just meant anything with fizzy stuff in it. He was very surprised to learn that actual cider involves fruit, that it is sometimes alcoholic, and that in English it is associated almost exclusively with apples and never with soda.
