New Entries/Amendments for 2006-11-03

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Headword 4臥龍点睛
Reading 1がりょうてんせい
Reading 2がりゅうてんせい
Part-of-speechn
English 1finishing touch
English 2completing (something) by executing the final, critical step
CommentThis popped up on Nep League recently, and the reading がりゅうてんせい was rejected. I can not find the りゅう reading of this word in any of the major dictionaries (広辞苑/大辞林), so I propose to remove that reading.
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Kenkyusha 5th ed has がりゅうてんせい which just references がりょうてんせい. The present JMdict/EDICT entry is marked "ik" to show the kana is irregular. I think I'll leave it like that.

Headword 1差を付ける
Reading 1さをつける
Part-of-speechn
Comment差を付ける 【さをつける】 (exp) to establish a lead; to discriminate

I have no problem with "to establish a lead" as one very obvious meaning, but I believe "to discriminate" needs to be restored to its original, not present pejorative, meaning (racial discrimination, etc.). How about "to ascertain or tell the difference (between)"? Hey, it's one thing to feel the language and quite another to be a lexicographer. Without context, even from Japanese to English, well "I am what I am" (truncated quote from Popeye).

Editorial Comment Broke that into a nother senses and added "to distinguish (between)/to ascertain or tell the difference (between)"

Headword 1及ばない
Reading 1およばない
Part-of-speechexp
English 1(1) unnecessary
English 2(2) unattainable
CommentMight as well split the glosses into two senses. (1) is generally (verb)におよばない while (2) is often でおよばない.

は confuses things though so it may not be a good idea to make separate entries for them.
