New Entries/Amendments for 2006-11-04

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Headword 1表日本
Reading 1おもてにほん
Part-of-speechn
English 1(sens) Pacific Ocean coastal regions of Honshu
CommentI suggest changing this from vulg to sens (sensitive?) since 裏日本 is marked similarly.

I understand that only the "ura" word is actually objected to.

Headword 1基盤
Reading 1きばん
Part-of-speechn
Comment基盤 【きばん】 (n) (1) foundation; basis; (2) infrastructure

I have a problem with the "infrastructure" rendering, which may indeed be accurate in context or as an ellipsis.
社会基盤 is rendered as "infrastructure" by ALC but I don't like that one either, since it's abstract and infrastructure for me is both the concrete (roads, subways, telephone as well as the ideas that make it all possible) and the abstract. Lest we go with gairaigo (インフラ), all I can find for infrastructure is explanatory as per 構造基盤.

Editorial Comment I agree. I'll drop the "infrastructure".

Headword 1時計台
Reading 1とけいだい
Part-of-speechn
Comment時計台 【とけいだい】 (n) clock stand; clock tower
I have a problem with "clock stand". It sounds like Edict spent some time in that "smoke-filled room" of chokuyaku-sha. Your thoughts, fearless leader. BTW, I love to make puns in Japanese, my recent favorite being "yakusha baka".

Editorial Comment The "clock stand" was straight out of Nelson. I have removed it.

Headword 1織り込む
Reading 1おりこむ
Part-of-speechn
Comment織り込む 【おりこむ】 (v5m,vt) to be incorporated in

Don't really like this one as it is a conclusion of the imagery, which is "woven" or "woven into/throughout". How I love the imagery of kanji.
織物 【おりもの】 (n) textile; fabric, which interestingly enough I did not find when I queried 織り. Oh, yes, I know that the hirakana is not included in 織物. While I'm charging windmills, how come (織り(P); 織 【おり】 (n) weave; weaving; woven item) 織り gets a P? Think I might need some context before I blurt that one out as a stand-alone.
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Added: to weave into. The P on 織り come from newspaper ranking.
