New Entries/Amendments for 2006-11-06

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Comment役を干される 【やくをほされる】 (exp) to be deprived of one's role

I dislike entries that are not fully explained or expanded upon. As an expedient I tend to take parts of an expression and expand upon them, often with success, often with dire and embarrassing consequences. So with
I can only find (and it make sense) "to have one's livelihood taken away". Any thoughts?

Headword 1法律相談
Reading 1ほうりつそうだん
Part-of-speechn
Comment法律相談 【ほうりつそうだん】 (n) legal advice

Whoa! This rendering is way off base! Lest I be construed as offensive, I shall not say more. I feel I must make constant apology for feeling what I know and lived in - at the exclusion of my own language - for so many years. I paid a price for this, Jim, long before Edict and the internet made things easy. Trust me I plowed through mountains of "authentic" garbage, before I finally gave up and trusted only the TV and my educated friends. Yeh, I feel disenfranchised and distinctly unappreciated by you. I guess that's the point.

At any rate, the rendering is wrong. Sorry.

Editorial Comment And the correct "rendering" is?

The Wikipedia article on 法律相談 describes it as: "法的な権利・義務関係を弁護士に相談することを指す。"
GG5 has: "giving legal advice" and the 中辞典 has: "legal advice".
Eijiro tends more to legal consultation:
■女性と家族のための法律相談 : legal aid consultancy for women and family
■法律相談 : legal aid services●legal consultation
■法律相談に応じる〔人の〕 : give someone legal advice
■法律相談所 : law center
■無料法律相談 : free legal counseling

I'll make it "legal consultation/(giving) legal advice/

You could just have easily examined these sources and made a specific suggestion of a correction.

CommentThis word is a lot more common than 産屋 and 産室 which are already in edict. In fact, it appears that 産室(さんしつ) is mostly used for veterinary-related stuff (animals). And 産屋(うぶや) is a rather old word referring to a separate building/outhouse where women had to live before, during and for a while after childbirth. Perhaps it should be marked with arch, obs or obsc, I don't know.

Editorial Comment Added "arch" to 産屋
