Current Entry | いじいじ /(adv,n,vs) reserved/timid/servile/unable to be honest/ |
Headword 1 | いじいじ |
Part-of-speech | adv,n,vs |
English 1 | reserved |
English 2 | timid |
English 3 | servile |
English 4 | unable to be honest |
Comment | This suggestion will perhaps be useless, but I believe I can feel いじいじ fairly well, as I do most Japanese whether I have heard/used it or not. いじいじ has a "slippery, dodgy, snake-like, spineless, sycophantic" feeling to it.
At present it stands rendered as "reserved; timid; servile; unable to be honest" which is OK but I think not so precise. Could use some help here from those who handle English better than I. |

Editorial Comment | I have extended it a bit, but I can't get confirmation it goes as far as sycophantic. |

Japanese Wikipedia まほろば:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahoroba Jonathon Delacour - the heart of things: ...But the real surprise is that the bonus DVD is titled まほろば (Mahoroba), a word I’d never heard of. I asked Natsuko what it meant but it was a mystery to her too. Nor could I find mahoroba in any of my Japanese-English dictionaries, print or electronic. Even more surprisingly, it was not listed in Jim Breen’s EDICT Japanese-English Dictionary file, which currently has approximately 106,000 entries. Yet a Google search in Japanese yields about 55,500 results whilst a search in English for its Romaji equivalent returns about 99,700 entries! http://weblog.delacour.net/archives/2003/10/mahoroba.php |
