Current Entry生かす(P);活かす [いかす] /(v5s,vt) to revive/to resuscitate/to make use of/(P)/
Headword 1生かす
Headword 2活かす
Reading 1いかす
Part-of-speechv5s,vt
English 1to revive
English 2to resuscitate
English 3to make use of
CommentRegarding the division of meaning between the two different kanji versions, it's a difficult matter to check but if we take ...

才能を活かす 12,600 yahoo.co.jp hits
才能を生かす 16,500
活かす殺すも 25
生かす殺すも 114

then we can get some picture. Clearly 生かす is freely used in situations not regarding literal life and death, and (although I could have hoped for bigger numbers) 活かす is
used relatively often when it is a situation involving
literal life and death.

I don't see much call for alteration on that basis.

English 2heterogeneous
ReferenceYour own example sentence, as well as other dictionaries, including the linked ALC and Sanseido sites, and my Random House dictionary by Seigo Nakao, which gives just "different (quality, nature)."
CommentUsed to compare two things, the meaning seems to be "different, foreign, alien". When talking about a single thing, the meaning is apparently "heterogeneous, unhomogeneous." As an adjective, it is used with both の and な

Headword 1化学構造
Reading 1かがくこうぞう
Part-of-speechn

CommentI really don't think the appendage, (of a drug), is helpful and may perhaps be misleading. I believe the concept to be much more general, with perhaps "chemical structure; chemical formula" being more appropriate.
NameDennis

Editorial Comment Several dictionaries add "(of a drug)", but I agree it is misleading. Added "chemical constitution". I don't think "chemical formula" is right.

CommentI don't really know how much of the "making of" to add to the wwwjdic entry, but basically looks likes it's the juice squeezed out of salted (also fermented in some explainations) fish. I'm erring on the side of simplicity. Probably short for 魚醤油(うおしょうゆ) but that doesn't get as many hits on google.
