Editorial Comment "relax attention" is in GG5, but it feels 和英英語 to me. I feel something like "to let one's attention drift" is more idiomatic English.

Current Entry大鋸屑;おが屑 [おがくず] /(n) sawdust/
Headword 1大鋸屑
Headword 2おが屑
Reading 1おがくず
Part-of-speechn
English 1sawdust
CommentQuestion, not an amendment. Why is the reading of 大 here お and not elongated to おう? Humble hint: Many times the Japanese people themselves cannot tell if the "vowel" is long or short, often saying it makes no difference. Is that the case here? Hello, Paul. As a monkey, I just copy and speak the language but never before needed to analyze it.
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment The 大鋸/おが is a traditional large Japanese pit saw. See http://www.dougukan.jp/archive/eng/B23e.html for pictures and text. Since 鋸 is not read が, my guess is that the kanji were added later, and that it's a 義訓 reading. It is sometimes written おおが - GG5 and Koujien have cross-refs under おおが pointing to the regular おが.

English 6a node in a bamboo stem
ReferenceThe following tells us that the correct term for "fushi" in English is "node":

http://www.americanbamboo.org/FAQ.html

The reference given in the previous submission tells us that this word means "knot" in wood:

http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=ふし&kind=jn&mode=1&base=1&row=1
CommentI saw this in the submissions page. I was surprised that the two additional meanings I've added above were not there, so I looked at the WWW reference given for the word and found the top two meanings in that dictionary being a node in a stem of bamboo and a knot in wood.
