New Entries/Amendments for 2006-12-10

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: Dec 11.
Current Entry万物流転 [ばんぶつりゅうてん] /(n) All things are in a state of flux/
Headword 1万物流転
Reading 1ばんぶつりゅうてん
Part-of-speechn
English 1All things are in a state of flux
English 2"all is flux, nothing stays still" (Heraclitus)
CommentThis (りゅうてん) entry had already been in EDICT when my
(るてん)version was added to it in 1997(?) from the first edition of my yojijukugo collection. The two versions have
obviously coexisted since then, though I haven't been aware of
it until pointed out by David Ranvig. I cannot find the
りゅうてん reading in any of the dictionaries I have consulted, either. All the 47 Google hits on りゅうてん are direct quotes from EDICT! I vote for the removal of
the りゅうてん version.

Current Entryはて /(int) well (used before sentences expressing a doubt)/now/TempSUB/
Headword 1はて
Part-of-speechint
English 1well (used before sentences expressing a doubt)
English 2let me see
English 3now
English 4TempSUB
ReferenceGG5 はて、はてな
CommentI wonder if "now" is a right translation for 「はて」. To be sure we say "Well, now, let me see...," and either "well" or "let me see" alone expresses enough of a doubt, but does "now" alone does the same? (Just wondering, not totally sure.)
NameKanji Haitani
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment For me "now ...." is an alternative to "let me see". I guess it's OK when "let me see", etc. are there to pin it down further.
I'm combining this with the existing はてな entry.

CommentSo according to 現代用語の基礎知識, in modern slang, かむ means "to falter one's words". Goo confirms, but assigns this slang meaning only to the 噛む writing.

the second sense should be tagged as slang. you might also consider assigning it only to the 噛む headword.

CommentRegarding "but I feel a little more is needed, as it seems to be used more often in female contexts." the problem is that a _lot_ more is needed.
