New Entries/Amendments for 2006-12-22

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: Dec 22.
Current Entry至難の業 [しなんのわざ] /(n) herculean task/next to impossible undertaking/TempSUB/
Headword 1至難の業
Reading 1しなんのわざ

Current Entryスッてしまう;摩ってしまう [すってしまう] /(exp,v5u) (uk,obsc) to squander one's money (through gambling, Pachinko, etc)/TempSUB/
Headword 1スッてしまう
Headword 2摩ってしまう
Reading 1すってしまう
Part-of-speechexp,v5u
English 1(uk,obsc) to squander one's money (through gambling, Pachinko, etc)
English 2TempSUB
CommentThis is probably worth having if only because it's a) a confusing term and b) is more often used than other forms of '摩る' with this sense.

_However_ the comments "スッてしまう is the most popular form on Google with 74k hits." shows that Kale Stutzman has failed to put quotes around the search term.

"スッてしまう" 399 Google web hits
"スってしまう" 94
"摩ってしまう" 30 (N.B. Some false positives but not as many as you'd expect).

"すってしまう" is futile to record hits on because false positives swamp-out true positives.

Current Entry動画 [どうが] /(n,vs) (1) animation/motion picture/moving image/(2) in-betweening (in anime)/(pref) (3) video/(P)/
Headword 1動画
Reading 1どうが
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1(1) animation
English 2motion picture
English 3moving image
English 4(2) in-betweening (in anime)
English 5(pref) (3) video
CommentWhy the (pref) on (3) ?
I presume that was added by Jim as it appeared to arrive 'between' amend submissions.

Incidentally I just heard 動画 being used to refer to taking video with a digital camera. A search on デジカメ + "動画を撮る" shows this is common usage.
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I'd seen it being used prenominally, e.g. 動画映像. In fact 動画の... is very common and の is often dropped, so I'll just stick with the main senses.

Current Entry対象外 [たいしょうがい] /(n) inhibit/

Part-of-speechexp

English 2(2) know-it-all manner
ReferenceGG5 白河夜船
大辞林、大辞泉: 白河夜船 (大辞泉2: 知ったかぶり)
Online 慣用句辞典:
白川夜船(しらかわよぶね・よふね)・白河夜船 1.いかにも知っているような顔をすること。。。。 2.ぐっすり寝込んでいて何が起こったか全く知らないこと。

My ATOK 14 IME: しらかわよふね → 白河夜船, but also しらかわよぶね → 白河夜船
I suggest combining all 3 headwords in one entry, and deleting the other entry 白川夜舟.

Part-of-speechv1,vi

CommentInconsistency: 捻じれる versus 捩じる as the primary readings of two verb forms with identical bases.

ALC recognizes only the hiragana ねじる and ねじれる and Yahoo! gives only 捩じれる as a possible reading though it prefers the kana.
Also, 拗ける and 拗くれる, which should derive from ねじる. I can handle this one, though, thanks to the abbreviated "糸 (string/thread)" insert in the kanji readings of 拗ける and 拗くれる.

Editorial Comment It's not EDICT that's inconsistent; it's written Japanese.
I have added 捩じれる. The dictionaries mostly favour 捩じれる and 捻じれる, but WWW rankings go to 捩れる, 捻れる, etc.

Current Entry受け続ける;受けつづける [うけつづける] /(v1,vt) to continue to receive/TempSUB/
Headword 1受け続ける
Headword 2受けつづける
Reading 1うけつづける
Part-of-speechv1,vt
English 1to continue to receive
English 2TempSUB
CommentEssentially the reason I submitted 受け続ける is because (although this is a rather subjective opinion) its usage seems to extend in ways that aren't immediately obvious.

Sentences like the following are as I would have expected 受け続ける to be used - somebody 'receiving' in a continual way.

この仕事の面白みは、常に技術が進化しているので、刺激を受け続けられることですね。
The fun thing about this job is that the technology is continually advancing so it continued to be stimulating.

It was the next sentence that threw me, generation after generation 'receiving' from their forbears. To date I haven't been able to find other similar examples or be clear about whether (or not) there is a clear difference (deserving a separate gloss).

じゃあ僕らはその腹いせ受け続けるんですか?
Then that animosity is being passed on down to us?

Editorial Comment The "P" comes from 捻じれる being on the "ichiman" list. I'll drop it to "ichi2" which removes the "P".
