Headword 1降誕祭

English 1Christmas, authentic term used within Japanese Christian denominations.

主の降誕祭夜半のミサ:12月24日(土)午後7時から
CommentMany dictionairies have Christian terms that are over a hundred years old, that were used in the Meiji Era, exclusively in Protestant denominations of that time, and were borrowed from Chinese Christian missionaries. Catholic and mainstream Protestant terms have changed some of these terms, and updating is needed.

Editorial Comment Thanks. I also see キリスト降誕祭 being used, so I'll add that too.
For 降誕祭 both GG5 and Koujien add that it can mean the celebration of the birth of a great man or saint.

I just found another case of it using the regular expression: "^[a-z].*[a-z][A-Z]$".

Headword 1九死に一生を得る

Comment九死に一生を得る 【きゅうしにいっしょうをえる】 (exp) to have a narrow escape from death
九死に一生を得る 【きゅうしにいっしょうをうる】 (exp) to have a narrow escape from death

As far as I can see this only needs to be double-entered if the verb conjugation is also given (because える is classified differently to うる).

Headword 1生存

Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1existence
English 2being
English 3survival
CommentWould suggest the addition of 生存する = to exist; to live; to survive

Editorial Comment That's implicit in the "vs". A longterm goal is the expand these so that the full verb gloss is given. I have expanded 生存 by hand, but I don't want a 生存する headword.

Current Entry年暮れ [としくれ] /(n) end of the year/TempSUB/
Headword 1年暮れ
Reading 1としくれ
Part-of-speechn
English 1end of the year
English 2TempSUB
CommentA comment, not an amendment, on 年暮れ as a noun.
I don't think there's such a word. (It's difficult "to prove
the negative.") "The end of the year" is either 年末 or
年の暮れ、but never (?) 年暮れ. (Virtully all the web hits on
年暮れ are in the form of 〜年暮れ (e.g., 2003年暮れ), which
is 〜年 + 暮れ.)
BTW:
Re: 年暮れる as a verb. What we find in 芭蕉's haiku (年暮れぬ笠きて草鞋はきながら)and 平家物語 (さるほどに年暮れて、治承も二年になりにけり)are conjugations of the archaic verb
年暮る(としくる)。 I'm not sure 年暮れる can be regarded as
a verb in modern Japanese, although there are some Google
hits. The writers who used this expression may have been
influenced by the 古語 forms 年暮れて、年暮れぬ、etc.
NameKanji Haitani
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I think I'll keep 年暮れ, but mark it "suf", and note it as "(..年 plus 暮れ)".

Current Entry存在感 [そんざいかん] /(n) one's presence (as felt by others)/
Headword 1存在感
Reading 1そんざいかん
Part-of-speechn
English 1one's presence (as felt by others)
CommentThe rendering as it stands is just fine. I just wonder if "charisma" might be worth adding to it. You know how much I eschew the use of gairaigo.
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I'm not sure charisma is a good fit. I note that none of the EJs I checked for "charisma" use 存在感. Maybe the heavy use of カリスマ is because there is no good Japanese equivalent.

Current Entry存在意義 [そんざいいぎ] /(n) reason for existence/raison d'etre/
Headword 1存在意義
Reading 1そんざいいぎ
Part-of-speechn
English 1reason for existence
English 2raison d'etre
ReferenceThough its a literal translation of the English, I believe 存在理由 is better for "raison d'etre; “reason for being”".
意義 gives this expression (存在意義) more of a feeling of "the meaning of life"; "the meaning of existence".
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I agree. I'll amend the 存在意義 gloss.
