New Entries/Amendments for 2007-01-11

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 11 Jan.
(esp. in Kyoto and Sapporo)/(2) what article? (in a law)/(3) (the 条 in 何条 is an ateji) (arch) how?/in what way?/
Headword 1何条
Headword 2
Reading 1
Part-of-speechadv
English 1(1) what street? (esp. in Kyoto and Sapporo)
English 2(2) what article? (in a law)
English 3(3) (the 条 in 何条 is an ateji) (arch) how can?
English 4cannot possibly
English 5there is no way

ない〕 cannot possibly 《do…》; (there is) no way 《can one do…》; how can 《one possibly do…》.
CommentCombining what the 古語辞典 and GG5 say, I have come up with the above three meanings. (I think "how can?" is better than "how?", which is too broad.) What do you think?

Headword 1
Reading 1
Part-of-speechn
English 1sex slave
CommentPerhaps this one is a matter of opinion as to how it translates into English. If I may offer my opinion, though, I think "army prostitute" is misleading. It implies that the said women provided sexual services voluntarily in exchange for money, which was certainly not the case. They were kidnapped and repeatedly gang-raped during their captivity. My suggestion is that the translation be changed from "army prostitute" to "sex slave" or some other term that more accurately describes their lot.
