These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Headword 1私語
Reading 1しご
Part-of-speechn,vs
English 1whispering

CommentI'm a bit dubious about this. Certainly there are times when 私語 has the furigana of ささやき but enough to justify calling it a reading for that kanji?

It's a very crude test but ...
"私語 ささやき" 104 Yahoo, 60 Google

For comparision,
"理由 わけ" 192,000 Yahoo, 251,000 Google.
(and 理由 isn't in Edict with the reading わけ)
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment 私語/しご is in heaps of refs, and 私語 is also shown as the kanji for ささやき in Koujien and Daijirin. I have combined the entries. Clearly ささやき is a 義訓 "reading" of 私語.
I think "理由 わけ" is a bit different.

Commentthis entry is kind of messy...
needless to say, (pt: sabao) should not be applied to 覇王樹 when it is read as はおうじゅ, only when it is read as サボテン
and if you want to get really picky, シャボテン does not seem to be a valid reading for the kanji themselves, (has a separate entry in 大辞林, and is not recognized by my IME)

Just about any ○○て conj will have a ○○ version - it's just 文語. For example に際し has 4,650,000 Google hits (2,370,000 yahoo.co.jp). I've been indexing these as に連れて{に連れ}

I've just been through the examples, did a little re-indexing etc and this is what I get ...

CommentThe following are not in Edict but should be:

そつえん

卒園式
そつえんしき

Now, even in the US, we have "graduation" and "graduation ceremonies" from kindergarten. Regarding the validity of such entries, suffice it to say that I attended my first
卒園式 in 1972 in Kashihara, Japan.

Editorial Comment I added this entry, but:
- PLEASE put them in as "new" to save me the work of creating entries for you.
- avoid capital letters except for proper nouns
- put different glosses/translations on different lines - NOT strung together with ";" as I have to correct them.
This is the last time I ask this. From now on, I will ignore further "amend"s when they are really new entries. Grrr.
