New Entries/Amendments for 2007-01-28

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Editorial Comment It's v5uru. Standard -得る construction.
Don't use "http://www.websters-dictionary-online.org" as a source. The Japanese section is a mess, and largely based on an old EDICT copy, over which the site owner claims copyright.

CommentI don't know how best to organize 甥、甥子、and 甥御, and besides, I can't find definitive references. So this is just a comment: I think both 甥子 (one's own nephew, or referring to another's nephew generally) and 甥御 (someone else's nephew, used with respect) are read おいご. Also, 甥子 is also written 甥っ子、but in this case case it is read おいっこ.

Editorial Comment I've made a merged 甥子/甥っ子 entry.
We already have 甥御 and 甥御さん. Are both needed?

Current Entry愛想を尽かす [あいそをつかす] /(exp) to be disgusted with/to run out of patience/to fall out of love/
Headword 1
Reading 1
Part-of-speechexp
English 1to be disgusted with
English 2to run out of patience
English 3to fall out of love
CommentRegarding "The correct reading is あいそう を つかす,
Reference? It's あいそをつかす in 大辞林 although given that 愛想(あいそう) redirects to 愛想(あいそ) quite possibly both apply in theory with あいそ being the more common.

Referenceja.wiki says that this is the "wa-mei" of "penguin".
CommentI haven't seen this form anywhere. Either it's very rare,
or it's a nonce word invented by some Wiki user.

Editorial Comment 人鳥 gets 35k Googits, some of which are genuine. The only dictionary ref seems to be Koujien's I'll include it, with an "obsc".

Headword 1無くす
Headword 2
Headword 3失くす
Reading 1なくす
Part-of-speechv5s,vt
English 1(1) to lose something
English 2(v5s) (2) to get rid of
English 3to prevent the occurrence (existence) of
English 4(v5s) (3) (亡くす only) to lose someone (wife, child, etc.)
Referencehttp://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=無くす&kind=jn&mode=0&base=1&row=1
CommentWhy is (1) (v5s,vt) but (2) just (v5s) ?

Logically (2) would only be 無くす, so you could add a (無くす only). Don't know if that is the case for certain, though.

I almost made "to prevent the occurrence (existence) of" a separate entry (as it is in 大辞林) but the dividing line is rather fuzzy. Sentences like
are difficult to classify between (2) and the 'prevent the occurrence of' one.

Editorial Comment Added "vt". Also added "usu. 無くす" to sense 2.

Current Entry感染の虞を無くす [かんせんのおそれをなくす] /(exp) to preclude the possibility of infection/
Headword 1
Reading 1

CommentThis type of 無くす is covered in my recent amend submission to that entry. The phrase itself is not common and I think can be deleted.

Headword 1出身者

Part-of-speechn
English 1alumnus
English 2(someone) formerly from (an organisation)
English 3(someone) come from (a country)
English 4(someone) born in (a place)
ReferenceSearches on terms like ドイツ出身者 as well as a couple of example sentences suggest that it is not limited to use as "alumnus". It is also used to talk of people who have come from a certain army (see 〜軍出身者 for example) and presumably other organisations.

The students were for the most part from the West Coast.
Nick looks down on any who comes from a rural area.
