New Entries/Amendments for 2007-02-02

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 5 Feb.

Current Entry成らしめる [ならしめる] /(v1) (see なり;しめる) (arch,uk) to make become/to let become/TempSUB/FIX xref/
Headword 1成らしめる
Reading 1ならしめる
Part-of-speechv1
English 1(see なり;しめる) (arch,uk) to make become
English 2to let become
English 3TempSUB
English 4FIX xref
CommentNow I'm persuaded that [形]+ならしめる=なり+しめる. Since my knowledge of 古語 is highly limited, I cannot delve into the matter in any depth, except to note what I think may be the case:
The difference in the structure between [名]+と+ならしめる and [形]+ならしめる may be greater than it first appears.
It seems safe to say that [名]+とならしめる=と+成る(ら)+しめる. But in the case of [形]+ならしめる, it is from なり+しめる. But since "「なり」=「にあり」の転"(古語辞典), [形]なり+しめる=に+あり+しめる。Therefore, 可能ならしめる←可能+なり+しめる←可能+に+あり(ら)+しめる. If this interpretation is correct, then what is at the base of 可能ならしめる is not the verb 成る、but the verb 在る・有る!
Perhaps it is best to have the cross-ref only to しめる.

Ex: 生臭いに老い "a fishy smell"

None of the dictionaries I have had "raw", but that is what I use in English in the situations where I use 生臭い in Japanese. Apparently it also means "fallen from virtue" if you are a buddhist monk (e.g. you smell like you have been eating forbidden food), I think fishy works there as well.

CommentThe recent なり submission gives me (as maintainer of the Examples collection) a technical problem. Because they have the same kana headword (and no kanji to distinguish them) examples for it, and this entry, will show up on the same link.

For the meantime I am indexing the 18 'new' なり examples to sense (4). Moving that なり to sense (4) and (5) of this entry is one possible 'solution' (if a clumsy one). Short of a change to the Examples indexing system (which neither me nor Jim would like much) I'm not sure what else to suggest.

CommentComment on the classification of なり
I really don't know what to suggest regarding the classification of the なり glosses, but below is what I have come up with to organize my own thought:

Using Yahoo!辞書 - なり (大辞林) as a reference:
http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=&dtype=0&stype=1&dname=0ss&pagenum=1&index=114713500000

Sense 6:[助動詞, aux-v] 古語,arch 〜ようだ、〜らしい、〜という、〜そうだ(推定、伝聞)... NOT in EDICT.
Sense 7:[助動詞,aux-v] 古語,arch 〜である、〜だ、〜にある(断定、存在)(Rest omitted, but includes 〜也.) This is my latest submission (New). on なり.
Sense 8:[接続助詞、conjunction] 現代文 〜するやいなや(Ex.帰るなり)=Sense 2 of the currenty entry of なり、〜したまま(着たまま)=Sense 3 of the currenty entry of なり in EDICT.
Sense 9:[副助詞,adverbial particle]現代文
[1] 〜でも(Ex.先生になり相談しなさい)
[2] in the form of …なり…なり: Select one of the series. (Ex. 困ったときには、父なり母なりに相談することだ)This Sense 9 of 大辞林 seems to correspond to Sense 1 of EDICT's current entry.

Wouldn't it be possible to group 大辞林's Senses 8,9,10 as なり(現代語) and Senses 6&7 as なり(古語)?

Looks like I have muddied the water by suggesting too many meanings of なり、but I think this adv-v,arch なり (especially Sense 7 of 大辞林)is important enough to be included in EDICT since it appears in many of the contemporary phrases (e.g., 時は金なり).

of course with hit percentages like those above, and the fact that the kanji form isn't listed in any of the online dictionaries, it's worth wondering if it's we should even bother putting the kanji forms in there

This is an aux-v (arch), and is not the same as the conjunction (modern) たり・だり I submitted earlier as Amendment.
Since I am not sure where (or whether) you would like to add this gloss, I am submitting it as an "amendment." But I think this archaic aux-v is rather important in that it appears often in the phrases frenquently used today (e.g., 下手の考え休むに似たり), just as the 〜なり in 時は金なり.

English 6(2) free of charge
English 7(3) but

Referenceyahoo翻訳 translates both "唯" and "只" as "but", and in the beginning of the animated series "Ergo Proxy" the introductory narrative character clearly says "ただ", which is translated into "nevertheless" in English subtitles.
CommentAdding definition "but" and "nevertheless".

Current Entry物なら [ものなら] /(exp) (uk) if I (we, etc.) could/
Headword 1ものなら
Part-of-speechexp
English 1if I (we, etc.) could
Commentsuggest this be written in hiragana only.

1) not listed in online dictionaries in kanji form
2) other edict "mono" entries are listed in hiragana only, i.e. ものの, ものを, etc.
3) creates a problem with false positives, i.e., this was recognized as a ものなら hit by google: "大きい物なら、..."

Editorial Comment Koujien has the 物なら form, so there is reasonable authenticity. I'm not sure I really want to banish the kanji version.

Headword 1ひどく
Part-of-speechadv
English 1awfully
Reference"私の妻はひどく猫が嫌いだ。

In yahoo翻訳 "ひどく" translates to "awfully".
Meaning that the literal translation is "My wife awfully dislikes cats".

Editorial Comment ひどく is the adverbial form of 酷い/ひどい. I don't think it needs its own entry.
