Headword 1 | 単身赴任者 |
Reading 1 | たんしんふにんしゃ |
Part-of-speech | n |
Reference | GG5: 単身赴任者
a worker [an employee] posted away from his family |
Comment | Comment only:
"someone forced to live away from their family for business reasons" or "someone living away from their family for business reasons" includes an independent business person living away from home "for business reasons." But the word 赴任 means a worker/employee going to leave/start for a new post. As such, it applies only to a member of an organization, not to an independent business owner. |

Comment | 1. Whereas 叔父・伯父 are related to the person, 小父 refers to an unrelated person. (GG5 includes all three under おじさん、but I think this is misleading.) IMHO, 叔父・伯父 is better listed separate from 小父.
2. 「年配の」means "elderly," i.e., older than "middle-aged." (GG5: 年配1 〔中年以上の年配)agedness; elderliness; senescence) 3. It's almost always used with 〜さん or 〜さま. 4. I am submitting 小母 as a New entry completeness' sake. |

Comment | Comment only:
IMHO, it wouldn't be wise to bring many of these 「2ちゃんねる用語」into EDICT. 独男 may be, but 毒男 ?? Some of these "terms" are a big joke, and I'm afraid their inclusion in EDICT would simply pollute it. We should be highly selective in adopting only those 2-Channel terms that are well-established as slang words in the larger community. |

Comment | Regarding policy on inclusion of slang, and particularly 2ch, terms my personal view is that having words like 毒男 in Edict is much like having entries like ...
がっこ (n) water (dialect from the Tsugaru region of Aomori) That is only of academic interest unless they apply to the bit of the world you happen to be in. They are also similar in that slang and dialect can potentially confuse users and bulk up the search results. I believe I have suggested in the past that, at some point, there needs to be some mechanism for including/excluding dialect terms. I don't see why slang can't be handled in the same way. As for 'polluting' Edict, the users of Edict are just as, if not more, likely to need to know what 毒男, 乙 and OTL mean than any number of the more obscure (arch) and (obsc) entries. One of the major points in Edict's favour is the good coverage of 新語, computer and Internet terms that tend to be five years out of date by the time paper dictionaries get them. Within reason I don't see why 2ch 用語 should be treated any differently. |

Comment | It is clear, both from the above link and from Google counts on relevant phrases, that the glosses given for this should _also_ apply as a sense on the 付ける entry. Which is a pity because 付ける is massively overloaded already. Merging might not be such a good idea but at the least a

Comment | oops. also adding new headword 8の字 and moving it to the front (more googits)
as one might expect, there appears to be a strong correlation on google images between 8の字 being used to refer to figure-eight, and 八の字 being used to refer to the shape of that kanji. It *might* be worth splitting this word in two to indicate this... |
