New Entries/Amendments for 2007-02-20

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 20 Feb.

Current Entry壁に耳 [かべにみみ] /(exp) walls have ears/TempSUB/
Headword 1壁に耳
Reading 1かべにみみ
Part-of-speechexp
English 1walls have ears
English 2TempSUB
CommentWith the latest New Entry submission 「障子に目あり」,
wouldn't it be better if this entry is changed to 「壁に耳あり」? It's almost always used in that form (and, of course,
in the 「壁に耳あり障子に目あり」form.)
NameKanji Haitani
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I agree. I make it thus, and I'll add an entry for 壁に耳あり障子に目あり.

Current Entryレトルト /(n) retort (food)/(P)/
Headword 1レトルト
Part-of-speechn
English 1retort (food)
English 2a sealed plastic pouch typically containing ready-made sauce or stew, to be reheated in the microwave or in boiling water
English 3boil-in-the-bag
Referencewikipedia on レトルト食品
CommentThe OED defines "retort pouch" as "a type of flexible packaging in which food is sterilized by heating in a retort", but I think that in English this is still a food industry technical term and the EDICT entry could therefore use a little clarification (which I have put in as sense 2). I'm not sure "boil-in-the-bag" matches completely, but as a single-word translation it's much better than "retort".

How to Compare a Flat Panel TV with a Flat Screen TV
http://www.ehow.com/how_1000449_flat-panel-tv.html
Flat screen TVs are normal tube sets where the screen is "flat" or level instead of being a curved surface, and their overall size is still large. The flat panel TVs also have flat screens but are less bulky than standard flat screen TVs and won't have nearly as much depth.
CommentDefining 薄型テレビ as "flat-screen TV" is misleading. Although many LCD and plasma type TVs are sold today as "flat-screen TV," this term also encompasses the old-fashioned CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs whose screen surface is flat (not curved). As CRT TVs, they are bulky (definitely not 薄型). Only the thin-model (slim-type) flat-screen TVs are 薄型テレビ.

CommentThis entry seems to be based on the common misconception of the origin of that phrase. The original meaning of チョン was _not_ Korean - as I pointed out in an amend to the entry for チョン some time ago.

Editorial Comment I agree, but I betcha people are coining those phrases with チョン = Korean in mind. I can go through changing Korean to "simpleton" but I feel I am sanitizing some Japanese xenophobia.

Editorial Comment There's a test you might like to apply. About 6 years ago I ploughed in a biggish batch of entries from what seemed a good source. Mostly they were OK, but they included quite a few expressions which turnedout to be clumsy or rare. The ent-seq are in the 18xxxxxx and 19xxxxxxx ranges. This one is 1855480.
