OED 2nd ed. initialism
The use of initials; a significative group of initial letters. Now spec. a group of initial letters used as an abbreviation for a name or expression, each letter or part being pronounced separately (contrasted with acronym).
CommentI think "abbreviation" is a broad term encompassing both "initialism" (each letter pronounced separately; e.g. U.S.A., DDT), and "acronym" (pronounced as a word; e.g., NATO, SCUBA). (Sometimes, however, "abbrevation" is used in the sense of "intialism," and that "abbreviation" and "acronym" are contrasted, instead of "intialism" and "acronym".
Since "abbreviation" is too broad, it might be best omitted for EDICT ?

Also, it appears that 頭文字 is also used to mean 大文字 (capital letter).

CommentRegarding "Are you sure パチンコする is not used to mean firing a slingshot?" I am sure パチンコする _is_ used to mean "play pachinko". I had never actually seen パチンコ used in sense 2 at all.

Looking at the dictionary it seems that a distinction is made between hiragana and katakana versions but even so a search on "ぱちんこする" (very few hits) was overwhelmed by sense (1).

So basically, yes, I am sure.

English 1(1) refreshed
English 2clear
English 3(2) shapely
English 4neat
Reference天気は安定しているわけではなく、吹雪が荒れ狂うこともあればすかっと晴れ上がるときもある。
Commentすっきり is an (adv,adv-to,vs).
すかっ is just an (adv-to). However it is one that is used overwhelmingly (but not exclusively) as すかっと+suru verb

Having すかっ as the headword stops you having the pos (vs) (Because there is no すかっする).

Having すかっと and すっきり in the same entry leaves you in the odd position of having to include both with and without と versions for すっきり. You can't have just すっきりと because it is most often used without the と.

I've mentioned that there should probably be some special handling for entries that very commonly have ○○とした / ○○とする etc. So if I was to invent "(vs-to)" then you might end up with ...

すっきり(adv,adv-to,vs)(P);すかっ(adv-to,vs-to) /(1) refreshed/clear/(2) shapely/neat/(P)/

(working on the pos alone). Note that many of the glosses are suspiciously 'adjective-y'.

Editorial Comment OK, I have split them (actually undoing a previous merger.) すっきり (no すっきりと) is adv,adv-to,vs and すかっと is adv,vs. すかっと has no "neat" gloss.
