Current Entryプール /(n,vs) (1) swimming pool/(2) pool/(P)/
Headword 1プール
Part-of-speechn
English 1(1) (swimming) pool
English 2(2) (n,vs) pool (billiards)
English 3(3) (n,vs) pool (together)
Referencehttp://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=プール&kind=jn
CommentRegarding ...

"Since "pool" in English (here at least) includes "swimming pool", I wonder if it needs to be spelled out here. However if Tanaka is any guide, プール is almost invariably "swimming pool". Is プール an abbreviation?"

Isn't the inclusion of the meaning of "swimming pool" in the English word "pool" just another way of saying that the English word "pool" can be an abbr. for "swimming pool" ?

大辞林 also gives, as part of the first sense of プール, スイミングプール.

Anyway I'm certainly not tied to having "pool" separate from "swimming pool". What about something like the above? (All senses seem valid, but we only have swimming pools in Tanaka as you point out).
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment OK, that looks good. I didn't want to add "abbr", because AFAICT プール is not an abbreviation of スイミングプール. The "abbr" referes to the Japanese headword(s); not the gloss.

Current Entryブロック /(n) (1) bloc/(n,vs) (2) block/physical record/(P)/
Headword 1ブロック
Part-of-speechn
English 1(1) bloc
English 2(n,vs) (2) block
English 3physical record
Comment"I made (1) "to block". "

Doesn't that go against your "to [verb]" policy?

""block/physical record" is computerese, a bit dated now, but in several computer term glossaries."

I'm not sure that's a good description. Wasn't it something like "block (smallest area of disk that may be occupied by a file)"? I'm not sure how "physical record" comes into it.
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment (a) the "to block" is just "vs" alone. When a PoS is only "vs", it needs a "to ...".
(b) the "physical record" goes back to magnetic tapes, which unlike disks could have variable-length blocks or physical records. It contrasted with a "logical record", of which there may have been several in a "physical record". I have annotated that gloss.

CommentRegarding ...
"Is it really that archaic? I'm surprised it's in Eijiro if it's archaic."
It's used quite often in manga/anime. That doesn't say anything about whether it is archaic or not but it does explain how it gets into Eijiro ;-)

Headword 2遮断器
Reading 1しゃだんき
Part-of-speechn
English 1(1) (usu. 遮断器) circuit breaker

Comment電流遮断機 142
電流遮断器 671

鉄道 遮断機 72,500
鉄道 遮断器 9,290

I think those sorts of figures are too close to be casually dismissed as 変換ミス, that there is at least some confusion or ambiguity about which is "right" among native speakers. I would suggest use of (usu. 遮断機) etc. rather than separating into two entries.
NamePaul Blay

Editorial Comment I looked at a sample of the 鉄道 遮断器 pages and they all seemed to be referring to circuit breakers in/for railway systems.

Reading 2れき
Part-of-speechn

大辞林: れき1 【暦】 [1]こよみ。
CommentI wouldn't put the "arch" tag on this word. We use 「暦の上では、暦の通り。。。」etc. (read こよみ)in casual conversation all the time.
Adding the れき reading. Perhaps this reading should be limited to its usage as a suffix? (太陽暦、陰暦, etc.)

CommentI assumed this should be てんおうせい as apparently did the blogger at http://yakushi.cocolog-nifty.com/jyoho/2005/05/post_e5e2.html but the first comment there explains why it's not. Anyway EDICT should probably include that reading since at least one dictionary has both: http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=%82%C4%82%F1%82%A8%82%A4%82%B9%82%A2&kind=je&mode=0

Probably warrants an (ik), especially since it has vastly fewer Google hits.
