I didn't think the "please remove"was too blunt. Not a problem.
I take the point about 赤烏帽子 really only being meaningful in the context og 亭主の.. The Koujien and Daijirin entries are pretty bland, and seem only to exist to point to 亭主の好きな赤烏帽子. Since 赤烏帽子 parses well into 赤 + 烏帽子 it is fair to ask does it has any other significance. I have just done a quick scan of WWW pages containing 赤烏帽子. Many are embedded in 亭主の好きな赤烏帽子 and/or are in pages explaining the kotowaza. A few though seem to be using 赤烏帽子 as a metaphor for "odd taste". Is this a valid assessment? If so it would be grounds for leaving it there with "metaphor for having an odd taste in clothes, etc." as a gloss. |

from kojien's kanwajiten entry for 匁: [尺貫法の重さの単位]は「文目」とも書き、単に「目」とも略す。 from kojien's entry for 目: 匁に同じ。 daijirin agrees with both of these assessments. neither dictionary has any indication of 匁 being pronounced め, however, my kanwajiten (漢字源) says the following: 《常用音訓》／もんめ 《訓読み》もんめ／め so, personally, I'd say that this entry might best handled by adding め as a reading to edict's 匁 entry (with perhaps an ik or ok tag), and adding 匁に同じ to edict's entry for 目. kojien omits 百目 as an entry altogether, and it seems that the only reason that daijirin includes it is to indicate that, in the common names that paul mentioned, such as 百目蝋燭, 百目柿, the 目 refers to 匁 not 眼. edict doesn't have entries for things like 百メートル, etc., so +perhaps+ it doesn't need 百目/百匁 either, except for the clarification reason above. incidentally, ひゃくめ is listed as a reading of 匁 in kanjidic, which should probably be removed. |

Removed ひゃくめ from 匁 in kanjidic. 百目 gets 40k+ Googits and 百匁 gets 12k, whereas 百目蝋燭, which is in Koujien, Daijirin and GG5 only gets 130. They are worthy of some recognition if only that 百目 is not obvious to the casual reader (100 eyes?!) Perhaps I should be recombining 百目 and 百匁. |
