| Comment | Ah. Didn't spot this one when it went in. Actually I've been meaning to put in an entry for たって for a long time but didn't get round to it because it's very difficult to explain.
It's similar to the ても of verbs in usage (言っても etc.) but more emphatic. The た is the past tense た of a verb when たって is used with a verb (行ったって) but a different formation is used with adjectives, negative verbs and other auxiliary things used with verbs. e.g. いまそれを直そうったって無駄だ。 It's is no use trying to fix it now. そんなトゲトゲしい言い方しなくたっていいだろう。 You don't have to use such a harsh tone with me. 見てなくたっていいよ。 You don't have to stand over me. カッコ悪くたっていいよ。 Now if anybody can think of a good way to phrase the above (preferably in under 255 characters) ... |

The references are ALL over the place on this.
Koujien and Daijirin only mention age-related stiffness. GG5 adds "frozen shoulder". Kenkyusha 中辞典 also adds "subacromial bursitis" (which is not really a shoulder complaint as such) Eijiro has both "frozen shoulder" and "stiff shoulder due to age". I'll add a second sense of "frozen shoulder", but it sort-of goes against the root of 五十肩. |

I'm not sure that this can 匹/ひつ can be used as a standalone word. I've only recently purchased kojien, so i can't be sure, but it seems that they often include entries in there that i would normally consider to be kanwajiten entries; i.e. they explain the meaning of the kanji as it is used within a compound. the entry for 匹/ひつ, for example, includes "examples" that consist of kanji compounds only: 1) 対つい。対になること。つれあい。つれそうこと。「匹偶・匹敵」 2) 対の一方。ただ一つ。転じて、身分の低い人。「匹夫・匹婦」 i don't see any evidence in there of 匹/ひつ being used as a standalone word. daijirin omits 匹/ひつ altogether. |
