New Entries/Amendments for 2007-03-31

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 31 March.
Current Entry突く [つく(P);つつく(P)] /(v5k,vt) (1) to thrust/to strike/to attack/(2) to poke/to nudge/to pick at/(P)/
Headword 1突く
Headword 2突付く
Reading 1つく
Reading 2つつく
Part-of-speechv5k,vt
English 1(1) to thrust
English 2to strike
English 3to attack
English 4(2) to poke
English 5to nudge
English 6to pick at
CommentI've come across this written as 突付く and said as つつく in games a few times (probably to distinguish it from 突く[つく]).

I don't have any good online/dictionary references (突付く + つつく 426 hits but I didn't notice anything looking particularly conclusive)

Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment OK, added. I think つつく is usually in kana. Also merged in the 撞く entry (Koijien.)

Current Entry突き付く;突付く [つきつく] /(v5k,vt) to thrust in front of one's eyes/
Headword 1突き付く
Headword 2突付く
Reading 1つきつく
Part-of-speechv5k,vt
English 1to thrust in front of one's eyes
CommentI suspect this deserves an (obsc), and the definition may well be incorrect (should probably be the same as 突く[つつく].

突き付く 17 yahoo.co.jp hits
突付く 71,700 (but I believe these are read つつく)
突きつく 7 hits
つきつく 152

The related
突っ突く (422 yahoo.co.jp hits)
http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=腦g&dtype=0&dname=0na&stype=0&pagenum=1&index=12419200
does have an Edict entry but it does not match that given in 広辞苑 or other dictionaries I checked.

If the original reference is known for this entry it should probably be checked.

Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Original source is lost in the mists of time. According to Koujien it's related to 突き付ける, so I have put an xref to there.

Current Entry突っ突く [つっつく] /(v5k,vt) to prompt someone/
Headword 1突っ突く
Reading 1つっつく
Part-of-speechv5k,vt
English 1(1) to poke/to nudge/to pick at
English 2(2) to thrust/to strike/to attack
Referencehttp://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=突っ突く&kind=jn
CommentAdd (see 突く)

Relatively rare (422 yahoo.co.jp hits) although maybe not quite (obsc) territory.

I think "to prompt someone" was "to nudge someone (as a signal to do something)" if the original reference is available it could be checked.

Editorial Comment Both Koujien & Daijirin say it's from 突き付く and it means つつく.

Editorial Comment I don't think marking of non-Jouyou kanji is needed. See the later comment on this one.

that makes it obsc, in my opinion

Current Entry押す [おす] /(v5s,vt) to push/to press/to stamp (i.e. a passport)/(P)/
Headword 1押す
Headword 2圧す
Headword 3捺す
Reading 1おす
Part-of-speechv5s,vt
English 1(1) to push
English 2to press
English 3(2) to apply pressure from above
English 4to press down
English 5(3) to stamp (i.e. a passport)
Commentdaijirin and kojien both have 圧す as an alternate headword for this

both also combine 捺す in the stamping sense, as linguist suggested

kojien also combines 推す, which daijirin leaves separate (better that way, IMO)

so 押す = all three senses, 圧す is (2), and 捺す is (3)

there is also the following which might be merged, but is perhaps better left separate because it is (arch):
圧す [へす] (v5s,vt) (arch) to dent, to press, to push

圧す can also be read あっす as the literary form of:
圧する [あっする] (vs-s) to press, to oppress, to dominate, to overwhelm

so that might be merged, or a separate entry created for that as well

Editorial Comment Done as you suggest. I won't merge 圧する.
