New Entries/Amendments for 2007-04-25

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 25 April.
Current Entry人込み(P);人混み [ひとごみ] /(n) crowd of people/(P)/
Headword 1人ごみ
Headword 2人混み
Headword 3人込み
Reading 1ひとごみ
Part-of-speechn
English 1crowd of people
Comment人ごみ 1,490,000 yahoo.co.jp hits
人混み 883,000
人込み 449,000

On those figures the (P) should go on the first (if it only goes on one).
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Interesting that 人込み was the one that both ichiman and the newspaper rankings rated. Also Koujien, Daijirin, etc. only have 人込み. I suspect IMEs are the reason for a lot of this. Mine offers 人混み first.

Current Entry頭字語 [とうじご] /(n) acronym/
Headword 1頭字語
Reading 1とうじご

CommentThe term initialism apparently applies to 頭字語 as much, or more, than acronym. Although I can't say I'd heard of it before myself.

Technically I suppose NATO would be an acronym and FBI an initialism but both are 頭字語

English 5(3) to protrude
English 6to project
CommentRegarding the recent amend suggestion for 飛び出す。
1. The references given aren't very useful for people who don't own the manga/anime. It would be nice to have a sentence or two for context.
2. Was it proposed as a new sense?
I can't comment on the accuracy one way or another as I don't know the context.
NamePaul Blay

Editorial Comment I added it as a new sense, although it could be argued it was part of sense 1.

Headword 1
Reading 1しょう
Part-of-speechpref
English 1a little bit
English 2few
English 3a small amount
Comment少 【しょう】 oligo (pref); LS

the above is what is given now when 少 is searched in the "translate words in a paragraph" function. While "oligo" may be a prefix meaning "few", it is not used that much in common speech.

I was searching for 少雨決行 and got this for 少. It would be nice to have a single entry for 少雨決行 too... but I'm having trouble coming up with something catchy. "not cancelled in the event of light rain" seems kind of long and clumsy.

Editorial Comment Isn't this slightly contradcting your later comment about 小雨/少雨? I have trouble seeing a sense difference between 小雨/こさめ and 小雨/しょうう. For its しょうう entry, GG5 xrefs to こさめ.

CommentIt appears that 小雨(こさめ、しょうう)means a little rain or drizzle, whereas 少雨(しょうう)means a slight rainfall amount (=少ない雨量). Therefore, 少雨決行 seems to me an irregular use of kanji, but I find quite a few of them on the web.
