New Entries/Amendments for 2007-04-27

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 27 April.
Current Entry小雨 [こさめ(P);しょうう] /(n) light rain/drizzle/(P)/
Headword 1小雨
Reading 1こさめ
Reading 2しょうう
Part-of-speechn
English 1light rain
English 2drizzle
ReferenceGG5:
しょうう【小雨】
〔こさめ〕 ⇒こさめ; 〔少ない雨量〕 slight rain; a light rain(fall).
CommentNot an amendment, comment only:

Re Editorial Comment: < Isn't this slightly contradcting your later comment about 小雨/少雨? I have trouble seeing a sense difference between 小雨/こさめ and 小雨/しょうう. For its しょうう entry, GG5 xrefs to こさめ. >

Yes, I now realize there certainly is a contradiction. I think it arose from the somewhat misleading entry for 小雨(しょうう)in GG5.
大辞林 distinguishes between the weather-condition/poetic term 小雨(こさめ、こあめ、しょうう)and the meteorological term 少雨(しょうう)雨量が少ないこと(as used in 「少雨にようる干ばつ災害」 yahoo). The GG5 reference shown above, however, implies that 小雨(しょうう)is also used to refer to meteorological condition when it says 〔少ない雨量〕. But between 大辞林 and GG5, I think it's safe to take 大辞林 and conclude that 小雨・しょうう = こさめ (weather condition)、and use only 少雨(しょうう)for meteorological condition.

Two related points:
(1) I have become more convinced that the 少 in 少雨決行 is an irregular use of kanji.
(2) I've found that 大辞林 has こあめ as another reading for 小雨. Perhaps this should be added to the 小雨 entry?

Editorial Comment OK, I think that's all tidied up now. I'll mark 少雨決行 as iK.

Comment"sports or disciplines which involve fighting without weapons" is a more concise defintion of the Japanese meaning (excluding martial arts which use weapons). Perhaps changing this definition to "martial arts which involve fighting without weapons" would be more appropriate than adding a second definition.

no dictionary has it, and googling for "黄色虫" "こがねむし" gives only edict-related hits

again, not a "goldbug", however tempting the translation might seem. they're from different families, and 黄金虫 are green, not gold

歩行虫 = おさむし、ごみむし
筬虫=おさむし
芥虫=ごみむし
塵芥虫=ごみむし

sense 1 = おさむし

Editorial Comment The "persimmons dried on skewers" is pure Nelson. "kebab" is very BrE; I'll go with a variant of GG5: "grilling on a skewer/spit-roasting".
