Headword 1
Headword 2
Reading 1
Part-of-speechn
English 1barrier wall
English 2TempSUB
CommentJust a comment:
I have a problem with this definition ("barrier wall"). For one thing, 垂れ壁 may or may not serve as a *barrier* wall. For another, a "barrier wall" may be a full wall, or a partial wall. I cannot come up with a good definition, but I think it might be something like "a narrow strip of partitioning wall attached to (or hanging from?) the ceiling, often serving as a smoke barrier" ??

Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I changed it yesterday to "hanging barrier wall, e.g., against smoke".
How about. "hanging partition, e.g., barrier against smoke"?

Headword 1

English 1dead silence after a joke falls flat (trans: white kick - loan translation of shirakeru)
Commentwhat's the reference for this?

no dictionary has it, and all online hits come from edict.

I question it especially, since the ける in しらける doesn't mean "kick".

Editorial Comment Kenkyusha 中辞典 has the example:

I'll add "usu. rice".

Editorial Comment My IME has 鰉 for ひがい.

Referencedaijisen has a nice definition:
1 米などの穀物を煮て食べられるようにする。「かゆを―・く」「赤飯を―・く」
2 (西日本で)煮る。「野菜を―・く」
and daijirin agrees:

Commenti think we have the same situation here that we had with きりぎりす/こおろぎ.

if you say かげろう nowadays, it means mayfly. so it's perhaps more clear to put an "(arch) dragonfly" sense on the current entry:
蜉蝣 [かげろう;ふゆう] /(n) (1) May fly/(2) something ephemeral/

also adding せいれい and とんぼう as readings (koj, daij)

for archaic words for dragonfly, there seem to be a few besides かげろう, if you're interested:
あきず【秋津・蜻蛉】
あきつ【秋津・蜻蛉】
えんば【蜻蛉】

also adding damselfly, as this is a blanket term that covers a whole order

reading restriction:

sense restriction:
sense 2 = ふゆう only

archaic headword かぎろう【蜉蝣・蜻蛉】exists, should you desire to add it, but restrictions are unclear.

Editorial Comment Adding 蜻蛉 to this has just created a duplication between entries: 1585910 and 1585900, both of which have 蜻蛉/かげろう combinations. Should I move the とんぼ & とんぼう readings in too?
