New Entries/Amendments for 2007-05-18

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 18 May.

Editorial Comment Is it really a "word"? Isn't it 連れ + 落ちる? It gets very few WWW hits.

Current Entry亙る;亘る [わたる] /(v5r) to extend/to cover/to range/to span/
Headword 1亙る
Headword 2亘る
Reading 1わたる
Part-of-speechv5r
English 1to extend
English 2to cover
English 3to range
English 4to span
CommentRe Editorial Comment: < Well, the Koujien entry for 渡る/渉 says: (「亘る」とも書く) >

Yes, and I have no problem at all with stating "(亘る sometimes used)" for the 渡る・渉る (to cross over, etc.) entry.

What I'd like to suggest is doing the same thing for the 亙る・亘る (to extend, etc.) entry, that is, inserting "(渡る sometimes used)".

大辞林 gives an example "二か月に―・る大旅行" for the 渡る entry, and says "「亘る」とも書く".

I also think that yahoo.co.jp hits comparison of 長期に渡る 149,000 and 長期に亘る 31,700 is significant.

I don't mean to persist in an argument, but I hate to see EDICT not allowing for the use of 渡る for such phrases as 二ヶ月にわたる大旅行 or 長期にわたる不景気.

Editorial Comment Since the cross-usage is in both directions, I think I'll combine them into a single entry, and not on the "to cross over, etc." sense "usu. 渡る or 渉る", and on the "to extend" sense "usu. 亘る or 亙る".

Current Entry居留地 [きょりゅうち] /(n) foreign settlement/concession/
Headword 1居留地
Reading 1きょりゅうち
Part-of-speechn
English 1foreign settlement
English 2concession
English 3(American Indian) reservation
ReferenceJapanese Wikipedia lists 'kyoryuuchi' as the Japanese term for American Indian reservations. Also, the article "Nenrei e no akunaki chousen" by Konno Yuri in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun for November 2004 uses 'kyoryuuchi' to refer to American Indian reservations.
CommentI used 'American Indian' instead of 'Native American' because 'American Indian' seems to have become the preferred term recently, but concistency within the dictionary might make 'Native American' more appropriate. In any case, the 'reservation' part is solid.
NameEric Prendergast

Editorial Comment I'll make that sense: "reservation (e.g., American Indian)" as it may be used elsewhere.

Reading 1そこねる
Part-of-speechv1
Part-of-speechvi
English 1wanted to do, but missed a chance, failed, or was unable,
English 2more regret or more out of one's control than そびれる
ReferenceTutorial topic with native speaker
CommentThe edict meaning of そこねる is currently just "harm". But used as a helper verb, そこねる imparts the meaning of a lost chance or opportunity despite one's intention, often due to yielding to outside influence. It is a subtle distinction from the meaning of そびれる which is also used in a similar manner. As explained to me:
~に 行きそこねました wanted to go, but couldn't
~に 行きそびれました could go, but didn't
The former is more regretful and potentially more polite than the latter.

Editorial Comment I'll add "(aux-v) to miss out, despite wanting to do" as a second sense. It fits in with 乗り損ねる, 見損ねる, etc.

Commentsorry, yet another change of heart on this one. i would imagine that at least some of the time, this actually refers to a swallow's nest. given that there are tons of google image hits with birds still in the nest, i would assume that this is the more common meaning

out with the old, in with the new
