Comment | alternate headword (koj)
i don't think i really like this definition (although i have a vague feeling i may have been the original submitter)... a google search for '"infinity gap" sleeve' brings up only edict-related results, so it's not a very common/useful term. also, the hole is actually in the *side* of the garment, as you can see in the koj diagram for 和服 and here: http://www.terra.dti.ne.jp/~astaire/kiso/kiso6.html |

Comment | I'm submitting this more as an fyi than an actual dictionary entry.I don't know enough about traditional dress to make heads or tails of the definition beyond it being a sort of outer wear for court officials.大辞泉 and 大辞林 list quite a few variant of this. Also, the definitions in turn have a great number of words not in EDICT. |

English 1 | pile |
English 2 | heap |
English 3 | layer |

English 5 | set |
English 6 | course (stones) |
Comment | The "set; course (stones)" is straight from Nelson. GG5 has two senses:
(1) pile; layers; etc. (2) set (futons, boxes, etc.) I don't think any of these senses are that clearly different. I'm inclined to: - combine your senses 1, 2 and 3 (BTW, there is no entry for 袍) - have 襲 as a sense of its own - have a "set" sense a la GG5. - include your sense 5. ============================= Hmm, if that's the definition of "set" then I'd say it's the same as the sense I submitted as a counter. The original koj/daij quote for this sense makes use of both "boxes" and "futons", the same as GG5's "set": [接尾]助数詞。数を表す和語に付いて、重なっているもの、重ねてあるものを数えるのに用いる。「重箱ひと―」「ひと―の座布団」 so perhaps you should alter the gg5 definition slightly to make it a counter (and replace my incorrect counter definition): 重ね 1) pile heap layering (of clothing, etc.) 2) (after a word from the "hito-futa-mi" counting system) stack (of cushions, boxes, etc.) "stack" indicates more clearly than "set" that the things are piled up on top of each other, which seems to be a requirement for its use if 襲 is given its own entry, i'd like to see it include both senses 3&4 from my original submission. i.e., it would be: 襲 1) layers of clothing worn under one's overcoat 2) (See 襲の色目)combination of colors created by layering of garments (colours) color of the lining and the outside of a piece of clothing (colour) |
