Headword 1検認
Reading 1けんにん
Part-of-speechn
English 1accredit
CommentThe only translation I can get anywhere for 検認 is "probate", which in English only has to do with wills. However, I just encountered it in the sense of "tester and certifier" (a person) with no connection whatsoever to wills. Actually, Kojien gives this aspect as its first meaning (検査して認定すること), with the legal usage secondary (maybe it started life as an abbreviation of 検査認定). The best translation I can think of is "accredit", although that doesn't contain a strong sense of examination. (Actually, the usage I encountered would be more like "accreditor", being in effect the title of a taskholder.) I'm open to suggestions for an English word or words!
I'm giving you my home e-mail address this time, as external correspondence from work has become awkward due to a security clamp-down (the fault of some idiot running Winny). Unfortunately, my computer at home won't handle Japanese text (I have ways of displaying it, but can't generate it).
NameMichael Poole
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment GG5 has probable too. I'll add "vs", and a seconds sense: "validation/certification/accreditation" which matches some of the Eijiro hits for 検認. (Actually that's what probate is. It's a certification of a will.)

Headword 1甲子園

English 1Koshien (location of Koshien Stadium, where the Japan National High School Baseball Tournament is held)
Comment甲子園 is where the ball park is located. the first google hit for this is "甲子園を目指して", so i could understand how someone might think this was an "abbreviation", but it's really no different than saying "So-and-so has his sights set on Beijing", or whereever the Olympics are going to be.

9 million hits, so perhaps worth keeping in edict (although 早稲田 gets 11 million hits and is not included)
probably best to replace the current enamdict with the suggested amendment

If it was _only_ 山が当たる then I'd agree but it's used in that way in at least four different phrases (make that five, just found 山勘). And in more general conversation as well.

Your example of "to put out to grass" is different _because_ you can't use 'grass' outside of that phrase.

Usage in examples
Sense 1: 36
Sense 2: 35
Sense 3: 11 (but I'm not sure they all fit well)

Examples [1]:
首を筋違いした。
"I have a crick in the neck."
彼は足首を筋違いした。
"He has sprained his ankle."
彼の主張は筋違いだ。
"His argument is illogical."
CommentAdded "vs" POS, "strain (muscle)" gloss, and split senses. Couldn't find any supporting references for either "cramp" or "intersection".

I think Sanseido [3] is indicating "adj-no" rather than "adj-na".

Is the "すじちかい" reading correct? I can only find ちが* kunyomi for 違.
