New Entries/Amendments for 2007-07-25

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 25 July.

Current Entry楤木 [そうき] /(n) devil's walking stick (tree) (Aralia elata)/Japanese angelica tree/
Headword 1楤木
Reading 1たらのき

Part-of-speechn
English 1(uk) Japanese angelica tree (Aralia elata)
Referencekoj: たら‐の‐き【楤木】
daijr, daijs: たらのき1 【▼楤の木】
CommentHmmm. The kanji has been corrected, but it still has the "wrong" reading. (i.e., no dictionary has an entry for any tree called そうき). Should be merged with the existing entry for 楤の木?

for the record
タラノキ gets 55k hits
タラの木 gets 22k hits
たらの木 gets 17k hits
楤木 gets 772 hits
楤の木 gets 8 hits.

Editorial Comment Oops. A bit of confusion there, but should be OK now.

Headword 1プレースメント
Part-of-speechn
English 1placement
ReferenceThis was actually used in a document I got internally at work written by a Japanese native speaker, so I assume it to be valid. I unfortunately cannot paste an example as the example sentence was in a confidential document. :)

Current Entry発する [はっする] /(vs-s) to fire (a gun)/to emit/to give forth/(P)/
Headword 1発する
Reading 1はっする
Part-of-speechvs-s
English 1to fire (a gun)
English 2to emit
English 3to give forth
Comment"I think the さない/しない is often broken, so I'm not surprised to hear that at least one has the "correct" form in the minority, at least on WWW pages."

Are you suggesting that 発さない is 'correct' and 発しない is not? Because the 大辞林 dictionary link has 「会議の間、一言も―・しなかった」
広辞苑 also includes 「一言も―・しない」so they both agree with the internet on this one.

Editorial Comment I wonder what the potential form is like. Perhaps we need "vs-s-i".

Current Entry伊達メガネ;伊達眼鏡 [だてメガネ;だてめがね] /(n) fake glasses/glasses with no lenses or 'window glass' lenses/TempSUB/
Headword 1伊達メガネ
Headword 2伊達眼鏡
Reading 1だてメガネ
Reading 2だてめがね

English 1fake glasses worn only for fashion
English 2glasses with no lenses or 'window glass' lenses
ReferenceGG5:
伊達めがね (a pair of) glasses worn only for [fashion/appearances]; plain glasses; plain-glass spectacles.
CommentAdd "worn only for fashion" to Sense 1?
I think the "for fashion/appearances" aspect is the essence of "伊達めがね". (Or, are "fake" and "worn only for fashion" redundant?)

Headword 1クレーム
Part-of-speechn
English 1(1) customer complaint seeking compensation

Commentクレーム is practically 和製英語 so I did consider having

customer complaint seeking compensation
trans: claim

to avoid misleading people. The above is a compromise of sorts, you could just make it
"(1) claim (for compensation)"
