Comment | This entry was for Cambridge. Seriously, it looks like the 'suggest' button forgets what it was aiming at if you go elsewhere (New Entry/Amendment -> Google Search -> April 21 page IIRC) and then back to the results display page. I'm using Firefox, btw.
It doesn't happen every time and I'm pretty sure it counts as a "trivial feature" but Kanji commented on it before so when it happened just now I thought I'd throw in a confirmation. |

How exactly did you get to "Cambridge" (I don't mean by train from Kings
Cross)? When I look up "Cambridge" or ケンブリッジ and then select "Suggest .."
I get the correct entry loaded.
I know things get screwed sometimes if you change dictionary, e.g. between edict and the_lot, because it preloads the page with the byte-offset of the entry in the file and it can get the wrong entry. Can you repeat it? If so, tell me the *exact* sequence that caused it. |

Editorial Comment |
If you ask for "amuse" and select "Exact Word Match", you are asking for
entries where to gloss is just "amuse" or "to amuse". As there are no entries
with just those glosses, you get no matches. The word "amuse" appears in
four entries (戯作三昧, 面白がる, 興じる, 興ずる) but surrounded by other words.
Is there a transitive verb for "to amuse" in Japanese? Maybe 慰める. My refs mainly show causative forms: 楽しませる, 笑わせる, おもしろがらせる. |

Comment | "I wonder if they are both not henkan misses for 疾うの昔."
As Rene points out 遠の昔 can't be a /henkan/ miss because you can't henkan to 遠 from とう. ;-) 遠の昔 is one of those rare web searches that seems to be _under_ represented on Google compared to Yahoo. There are 3,350 hits claimed (of course you can only actually see 1,000). I get 576 you-can-actually-see hits for "疾うの昔" which puts it in the unusual position of having the 'correct' phrase's kanji being outnumbered by the incorrect. 43,600 for 当の昔 leaves an even larger gap in the wrong direction, although at least it's surpassed by the safe とうの昔 (308,000). How many of those people who wrote とうの昔 know how that phrase was derived I don't know. Going by the following link, possibly not that many. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/piroq/200412 |
