A football (as opposed to the game football) in the UK is a synonym of the ball used in 'soccer'.

Current Entryサッカーボール /(n) soccer ball/football (not American)/TempSUB/
Headword 1サッカーボール
Part-of-speechn
English 1soccer ball
English 2football (not American)
English 3TempSUB
Comment"And presumable not Rugby, not Gaelic, not Australian Rules, not [insert all footbal types except soccer]."

They're not football types, they are games played with a ball. I've never heard a rugby ball called a football and even if an (American) football is called an (American) football it isn't the same as a football (as seen in the UK).

Anyway, and back to the point, if (as a UK citizen) I was searching this database for something to play football with I'd like to know that answer isn't going to get me some stupid pointy thing.

I suppose I could have put
football (not some stupid pointy thing)
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Nonsense. There are several types/codes/whatever of football, played with either round or elongated balls. I am quite aware that devotees of soccer have tried to claim a monopoly on the use of the word "football", and I say a pox on them. (I am reminded of a time in Tokyo when a Merkin was trying to tell me that hockey was only played on ice. The hockey we play here was allegedly a different game called "field hockey".)

To make the 掛ける entry slightly less insane why not make 架ける a separate entry and include (sometimes written 掛ける) in it? That will allow more justice to be done to the 架ける sense as well.
