Comment | "Indecisive" as a rendering is highly misleading. 不明確 is more in the direction of "unclear or imprecise" and as such would also be the opposite of 明瞭. |

> as opposed to someone just replacing the marks with a word > of the same meaning? i.e., i wouldn't say that the "reading" > of English ditto marks would be "same as above"." I don't know that it _isn't_. I do know that x can be read かける, - read ひく, = read イコール, and 〜 ないし. Because those are all symbols I have heard read alongside display of text. As such 〃 being read おなじく sounds entirely reasonable to me. Same thing as & in English /is/ 'the ampersand mark' but is read 'and'. Now if you want to argue that those aren't readings of the symbols but the symbols are just used to represent the words then isn't that just what kanji do? :-P |

Comment | a few things.
1) the ampersand corresponds exactly to a single word: the word whose place it was designed to take (and was named after). i don't know that you can say the same for ditto marks. imo, they're shorthand signs of repetition without any one fixed reading (like the ゞ in いすゞ). if they're used in a chart beneath "50 you would (or at least *i* would) normally read them as "50 Just as you *could* read 〃 as おなじく (同じく), i think you could also read it as どうじょう (同上) or どうさ (同左) or any other number of similar words. 2) no dictionary has an actual reading for these (although if you search yahoo for them, おなじ pops up.) wiki has some alternate *names*, but no "reading" per se: 「〃」は、ノノ字点(ののじてん)や同じく記号(おなじくきごう)とも呼ばれ、表などで上または左の内容と同一の場合の省略文字として使用される。わかりやすく「チョンチョン」と呼ぶこともある。 3) if you are going to assign a fixed reading to 〃, perhaps we should take a quick survey. the only way i can get these to show up in my IME (Kotoeri) is by typing in おなじ. おなじく gives me nothing but 同じく. |
