Part-of-speechn,adj-no
English 1(1) pit (of a fruit)
English 2stone
English 3(2) core
English 4(3) nucleus
English 5(pref) (4) (See 核兵器) nuclear
CommentI don't think dropping the (pref) is a good idea.

The existing examples for this include ...

核時代 nuclear age
核シェルター nuclear shelter
核破壊 nuclear destruction

Now all of those happen to include the /meaning/ of 'bomb/missile' but none of them include the actual words in the common English equivalents. If you look at Edict entries starting with 核 there are very many simple compound words with "nuclear ○○" as the 訳語. Including 核兵器 itself for that matter. I don't think 核 is an abbreviation of 核兵器 as such because that would tend to imply that it is used on its own to mean that.
NamePaul Blay
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Actually, in editing in Rene's suggestions I left the "pref" on nuclear because I have the same opinion.

CommentYou'll likely want to trim and merge some of these meanings since many seem to line up with the various possible senses of "run" in English.

(5) to elope
(6) (esp 趨る) to tend heavily toward
(7) to race across (lightning across the sky)
(8) to run (pain though one's arm, etc)
(9) to run (brush across paper, etc)
(10) to run (a path through a city, mountain, etc)
and a bunch of archaic meanings

apparently the original character was 蘜. But, since that's not encoded by JIS at all...
CommentWhat exactly is the style that should be used on the definitions for biological families?

-No kanji in the head words except for the classification?
-A (See X) where X is the name of the family in the first line and in kanji?
-the scientific name first with (plant family)?
-the common names (if any) next with (common name) on each line or just the first line?
-"the" or no "the"?

I ask because things are a tad inconsistent in the examples I tried looking though.

CommentThere are 43,000 yahoo.co.jp hits for 回胴式遊技機, and
33,000 for パチスロ and 回胴式遊技機 on the same page. I think this offers some support for the statement that 回胴式遊技機 is the formal name for パチスロ (although there is little evidence that パチンコ式スロット was ever used). There are also plenty of references to that in the above mentioned search ...

有限会社ライリィは回胴式遊技機(パチスロ)の技術者集団です。

遊技機規則で回胴式遊技機というのが定められている。 いわゆるパチスロのことである。

回胴式遊技機、すなわちパチスロを愛する人との情報交換の場にしたいと思います。

パチスロの正式名称、回胴式遊技機の文字を前面にプリント背面にはPACHI-SLOTの文字とstopボタンをイメージしたデザイン...

Exactly how a パチスロ differs from a スロットマシン or 回胴式遊技機 (if it does) I do not know. It does seem that 回胴式遊技機 is used to refer to Western slot machines so maybe the Japanese aren't sure what difference (if any) there is either.

CommentFor some reason, none of the big three dictionaries list 翌る, while the synonym dictionary on yahoo does. And 翌る does get enough google hits (unless I'm terribly mistaken about the reading).

I'm really not sure about POS though. They mark it as 連体, so I guessed it should be adj-pn. But upon searchin found that words like 逆引き, 多結晶性, 共同視聴, 油密 are also listed as adj-pn. Uhm, I'll leave it upon people who know better to decide.

Comment>"I don't think dropping the (pref) is a good idea."

==

just because it comes first doesn't make it a prefix. slamming two nouns together is the way that compound words are formed, and 核 is free to act as a standalone word in its 4th sense. i.e., "核の問題", "核の廃絶", "核の持ち込み", etc.

and if you were going to give (pref) status, it certainly wouldn't be only to the 4th sense. i.e., 核融合, 核家族, 核兵器 itself, etc.

"nuclear" is certainly a common translation, but the only fair way i can see to include it would be redundancy; just giving the obvious adjective form of the noun:

(n,n-pref) (3) nucleus
nuclear
(n,n-pref) (4) (See 核兵器) nuclear weaponry
nuclear

or:

(n-pref) (5) nuclear

Comment"i'm not sure what the "irregular forms" note refers to."

For example,
いらっしゃった 3,850,000 vs
いらした 3,730,000

またいらっしゃって 30,300 vs (<- Is that right? I don't have a ref. for v5aru handy)
またいらして 398,000

As you can see the 'irregular' hits are often as high, or higher, than the 'correct' version.

"居らっしゃる gets 15k hits. if it's not too confusing, might include as an (iK) form, or add it to the notes for the entry, as daijisen does"

The 大辞泉 note in question is presumably
「居らっしゃる」と書くのは誤り。
I'm not sure having that as the only kanji headword is a very good idea. 15k is pretty tiny compared to the kana version anyway. (26,900,000 by Yahoo, 15,600,000 by Google).
