Just noticed that this entry has four 'Also's in it, thus monopolizing 25 percent or so of the total 'Also' count. :-/ 広辞苑 has 元 本 基 and 原 in it's entry. In view of the WWWJDIC search system being a bit generous in the headword department may be appropriate. Looking at (3) 因 and 原 seem to be pretty rarely used so not having them as headwords probably won't hurt anything. "ガンの元" 543 "癌の元" 290 "ガンのもと" 467 "癌のもと" 79 "ガンの因" 1 "癌の因" 4 "ガンの原" 84 (nearly all false positives) "癌の原" 20 (nearly all false positives) However I've seen the kanji in (2) and (4) used quite frequently (By the web hits 素 would seem to be used slightly more often than 元 for (4), 基 just a bit under 元 for (2)).
