Commenti nominated this for deletion on feb. 17th, but it was kept, with the following note:

==

Koujien only has the measurements, but the Kodansha GJD has a regular entry: "ぶ【侮】 - あなどること。軽く見ること。「侮辱・侮蔑・軽侮」"

==

Personally, I would say that's a kanwa-entry, and can still be safely deleted, since the only "examples" they can manage are for kanji compounds.

Incidentally, that entry is *identical* to Kojien's. A little bit of plagiarism on the part of Kodansha?
NameRene Malenfant
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment It's absurd, but all I can find in the GJD now is the kanwa entry. (Many 国語辞典 have identical entries. Tom Gally wrote an article about it once.)

English 1(1) Japanese traditional measure. Equivalent to 30.3 cm
English 2(2) oblong, can refer to an object with an oblong shape.
ReferenceTanshaku may be seen in technical documents, but not in familiar speech.
CommentI found this kanji with the explanation in this dictionnary. But, one of the meanings as "long", I thought it may be a miss when typing and in fact it should be "oblong".
The alternative headword isn't a regular word in speech, but can be seen in technical documents. But if you have "short" and "long" together it doesn't make any sense.
I often use your dictionary, it's so great.

CommentRe your Editorial Comment: "Interesting that here (Australia) virtually the whole education system would be an "escalator"."
That comment gave me a second thought on this word 一貫教育校."
I now think it's not quite the same as an "escalator school."
一貫教育校 generally refers to an integrated set of middle and high schools (or elementary and middle schools) done on a local/regional basis or provided by associated schools. An "escalator school" (エスカレータ校), on the other hand, is usually a private school that allows students to advance from (usually) kindergarten to university without requiring them to take entrance exams en route, exams that are required for applicants from other schools. I'll give it some more thought, and submit an amendment on 一貫教育校 and a new entry エスカレータ校. Other people may have good ideas, too.

エスカレーター学校とは俗な言い方なのですが、社会一般に通用したもので、すなわち、幼稚園から大学まで連続して、或いはその途中からでも、一校以上の上級の学校に連続して設置されている学校のことです。一番すごいケースは幼稚園に入学してそのまま大学まで学科試験等(受験)がない状態で進学できます。

An Analysis of Gender Differentiation in "Escalator Schools"
http://ir.library.tohoku.ac.jp/re/bitstream/10097/13985/1/47-04.pdf

エスカレーター学校とは俗な言い方なのですが、社会一般に通用したもので、すなわち、幼稚園から大学まで連続して、或いはその途中からでも、一校以上の上級の学校に連続して設置されている学校のことです。一番すごいケースは幼稚園に入学してそのまま大学まで学科試験等(受験)がない状態で進学できます。

CommentI presume the earlier amend should have been to add a new sense to the existing entry.

Incidentally is there a reference for the "このじゅう" reading?

> Paul: useful sentence?

The three questions that come to mind are
- natural Japanese?
- not copied directly from a dictionary
and
- covers new vocabulary/usage

I can't answer the first two but that use of このうち is not currently covered in the examples and is common enough to have. I picked out the following sentence off the Internet

このうち大事なのは後者の方です。
Of these it is the latter one that is important.

'counting' 観点 is a bit unusual as well. "第二目の観点".
That's not common though, around 50 relevant hits for ○○目の観点 (mostly 1つ目, 2つ目, etc.) so I'm not sure it's
worth having specially.

I could certainly add

この内大事なのは第二目の観点である。
Among these views, the second one is of importance.

as well if you think it is worth having.

Comment"again, i would say it forms compounds, and is not a prefix. no dic has it"

If it forms compounds where it is placed before a noun, isn't that just the same thing as saying it's a (pref)/(n-pref) ?

I would say that debate on what is/isn't a prefix should go to
http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
but it seems to be down right now.

CommentAdded "uk" (GG5), but isn't this now overlapping with the "other" かな particle entry?

I really don't know. This seems to be more of a "ですね"/"だなあ" than "かな".

The only one of the dictionaries' example sentences I can understand is this one.

CommentThis is a Buddhist term, found in sutras. The other translation given in the edict is not incorrect (and I suggest that you keep it for non-Buddhists to understand its meaning), but this is the 'technical' translation that would be found in the translation of Buddhist sutras.
Congratulations for your most valuable contribution to Japanese study! Thank you.

Is "the Buddha, the doctrine, and the priesthood" a translation of "Buddha, Dharma, Sangha"?
