New Entries/Amendments for 2007-11-01

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.
Annotations completed: 1 Nov.

Comment> 吝嗇 as けち is rather iffy, especially as the primary
> reading of these kanji. when you see this normally,
> りんしょく is the first reading that comes to mind.

A simple 読み方/振り仮名 search would suggest that there may not be that huge a difference.
"吝嗇 けち" 325 hits,
"吝嗇 りんしょく" 529
"悋嗇 けち" 0
"悋嗇 りんしょく" 10

> probably better to separate them, with an "Also written as"
> for けち or x-refs between them

There are only 30 web hits for 悋嗇. Which means that there are 295 more web pages where 吝嗇 is presumably intended to be read けち as it has the reading/furigana to show it.

> 吝嗇 doesn't refer to a person (i think)
> so remove those entries from here as well. also, not vs

pos and usage are good potential reasons for separating things, but you could cover both by dividing this entry into a few senses and including restrictions.

Editorial Comment This is all quite complicated. After much going back and forth, I decided to split them into "吝嗇/りんしょく (sometimes read けち)" and "けち (also 吝嗇)" entries. This is despite there probably being enough evidence of 吝嗇 being used with a reading of けち to justify combining. I also stripped 吝嗇 out of the related けち... entries.

Commentimo, りんしょく should far-and-away be the primary reading for these kanji (google yomigana hits are often biased towards unusual readings, because people don't give the reading when it's obvious). 吝嗇 gets 70000 hits, and i'm of the opinion that a native speaker would read them all as りんしょく except where otherwise indicated. (i could very well be wrong about this, however.)

unfortunately, if りんしょく becomes the primary *reading*, then you end up subjugating the much, much more common *word*.

the only ways out i could see were: a) having けち(ik)(P) as the primary reading, b) moving けち(P) to the second reading and "letting the (P) speak for itself" or c) splitting the entry.

but i guess once it gets dumped to the flat file, it doesn't really matter what order they're in
