Current Entry放つ [はなつ] /(v5t,vt) to free/to release/to fire/to give off (e.g., a scent)/(P)/
Headword 1放つ
Reading 1はなつ
Part-of-speechv5t,vt
English 1to free
English 2to release
English 3to fire (e.g., an arrow)
English 4to give off (e.g., a scent)
English 5to hit (baseball)
ReferenceEijiro and Sanseido for the clarification to 'to fire'; Eijiro for the baseball sense.
Commenthttp://www.asahi.com/sports/bb/TKY200710280027.html is where I came across the 'to hit' sense, and it's in a lot of the Eijiro examples too. I think 'to fire' without the eg is misleading, especially coming after 'to free' and 'to release' -- I thought it might be supposed to mean 'to give s.o. the sack' at first.

Current Entry番手 [ばんて] /(n) count/(P)/
Headword 1番手
Reading 1ばんて
Part-of-speechn
English 1(yarn) count
ReferenceSanseido and Eijiro.
CommentI think plain 'count' is rather misleading.

I'd like to put in the fact that 2番手, 3番手 etc mean the 2nd and 3rd starting pitchers in baseball (ref: Eijiro), and 2nd, 3rd place in other sports (ref: Eijiro, 大辞林), but I'm not sure how that's supposed to be indicated here.
