Current Entryカ行 [カぎょう] /(n) classification for Japanese verb with the dictionary form ending in
Headword 1か行
Headword 1カ行
Reading 1かぎょう
Part-of-speechn
English 1second line of the gojūonzu or Japanese syllabary table (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko)
Referencehttp://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/茵
http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=か行&kind=all&mode=0&kwassist=0
CommentThe previously given sense of "classification for Japanese verb with the dictionary form ending in "ku"" appeared in no reference works that I consulted. Also, the hiragana form is always preferred when speaking about the morae themselves, although the katana form seems to be sometimes used to refer explicitly to the katakana table. The inexact term "Japanese syllabary table" is used to keep consistency with gojūon-related entries in edict.

Reference源五郎田亀, 「ウィルトゥース」(Tokyo, 株式会社オークラ出版: 2007), ISBN 978-4-7755-1058-2, page 138.
CommentThis was used to terminate a short manga, 雪源渺々, which tells a story that takes place during the Russo-Japanese war--probably to give an antique feeling.

It took me a long time to figure out that this was an older "spelling" of the common expression "owari" for "the end" at the conclusion of a communication--and only when I saw it used elsewhere, similarly (on-line) did I realize that this is the same sound change as "kaha" becoming modern "kawa" ("river"). Apparently, it was common to write this notation in katakana.

CommentThe English term "diacritic" or "diacritic mark" clearly describes what the "ten-ten" and "maru" are. Should it be included or cross-referenced?
Can we coin a name for these little marks?

Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment I don't think so. 濁点 and 半濁点 are specific Japanese cases of diacritical marks, but they apply quite specifically to the nigori and maru marks. I don't thing acutes, graves and umlauts are 濁点. I have added entries for ダイアクリティカルマーク and ダイアクリティック

Headword 1一輪手押車
Reading 1いちりんておしぐるま
Part-of-speechn
English 1wheelbarrow
Comment"one-wheel hand truck"? Well, I suppose it's a fair description, but it's not what the average gardner or navvy calls it, at least not in Pommieland, anyway. The proposed amendment is of course expurgated.

Actually, I got to this entry looking for a reading for 手押車 just out of curiosity - it's the inverse of Bernard Miles' old peasant's problem: "Well, I can understand it, but of course not to read it."

Cheers

Editorial Comment That 一輪手押車 entry is in the "riverwater" glossary, which has a lot of 直訳. It only gets 7 Googits. Not worth adding.

CommentJust making it a bit clearer that the sense isn't restricted to a physical address book, really. (One of the example conversations in this textbook includes:

which is what prompted this suggested amendment.)

ReferenceEijiro
Comment'alma mater' in (UK) English is (a) rather old fashioned and (b) generally only applied to suitably famous universities and public schools. You'd never say 'My alma mater was Bloggsville Comprehensive' unless you were being deliberately humourous, so I've widened the definition a bit.

(Is the Japanese always specifically referring to schools rather than universities?)
