Headword 1
Reading 1しょう
Part-of-speechsuf
English 1minister of state
ReferenceThis suffix is used alot in compound nouns. For example:

石破防衛相 (Ishiba bōeishō, defence minister Ishiba)
(From 読売: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/e-japan/tottori/news002.htm)

Japanese newspapers are replete with examples of this usage.
CommentI've ran into a number of compound nouns for the minister of some ministry that were not in edict on several occasions. I think it is impossible to list the Japanese term for the minister responsible for a certain ministry for every country in the world, as the names used for ministries differ greatly, so having this entry as a suffix seems a good alternative.

The pronunciation for this specific usage of 相 is always しょう as far as I can tell.

Editorial Comment I'm very surprised it wasn't there already. I have it in the special single-kanji list used in the text-glossing function (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?9MGG%C0%D0%C7%CB%CB%C9%B1%D2%C1%EA) but must have forgotten to put it in the main file.

Current Entry姪子;姪っ子 [めいご(姪子);めいっこ] /(n) niece/
Headword 1姪っ子
Headword 2姪子
Reading 1めいっこ
Reading 2めいご
Part-of-speechn
English 1niece
Comment"姪っ子" gets 50 times more hits, and having it as the primary reading might prevent confusion with 姪御.

Since 姪子[めいご] seems to be little more than a borrowing of 姪御 to refer to one's own niece, perhaps there should be an x-ref there? or to 姪?
