Comment | I don't find 同訓 anywhere but in Edict. I can't imagine using it without needing to explain it with "onaji kun-yomi" or something to that effect. If it's not in Eijiro, the library of the arcane and the insane, it probably doesn't exist. |

Reading 1 | どうおんご |

English 1 | homonym |
Comment | Oh boy, here I go again, but 同音語 does not mean "synonym". 同音語 is a homophone which is quite different from a synonym. Japanese, like English, is rife with homophones. Example: to =/= too =/= two (same sound, different meanings and often/usually different spellings/etymologies. |

Current Entry | 類語 [るいご] /(n) synonym/ |
Headword 1 | 類語 |
Reading 1 | るいご |
Part-of-speech | n |

Comment | Call me a pedantic (call me anything; just spell my name right) but I don't like the rendering of 類語. Etymologically, and I trust etymologies at lot more on English where I am on more solid footing with Latin, 類語 "literally" means "same class of word" or "words of the same class". From this suggested rendering, then, it is an easy jump to 類語辞典 which means thesaurus. Although I typically eschew the use of thesauri, my understanding in them is that the words listed would not overlap (Venn diagram) as nicely as synonyms such as big = large, etc. A quick look at an English thesaurus reveals the obvious: it is not purely a collection of true synonyms. Hope that helps |

Comment | 類義語/類語 and 同義語/同意語 both seem to be covered under the english "synonym" (words w/ "similar" vs. "identical" meaning), but could perhaps use further explanation and x-refs to each other.
japanese wikipedia calls 類義語 a "quasi-synonym": とは、意味が似ている語のことである。広義においては意味を全く同じうする同義語も含まれる。類語ともいう。 perhaps something like: 類義語 [るいぎご] (See 同義語) synonym (with similar or identical meaning) quasi-synonym 類語 [るいご] (See 類義語) synonym (with similar or identical meaning) quasi-synonym 同義語 [どうぎご] (See 類義語) synonym (with identical meaning) 同意語 [どういご] (See 同義語) synonym (with identical meaning) |

Editorial Comment | "synonym (with similar or identical meaning)" sounds tautological to me. I For 類義語 and 類語 I'll bite the bullet and put: "quasi-synonym (word that has a similar meaning to another, but is not interchangeable)". |
