New Entries/Amendments for 2007-12-20

These are the submissions received via the WWW forms for this day. I (Jim Breen) will annotate the submission if I think it needs to be amended or rejected or if I have a question about it. Otherwise it can be assumed that it has been accepted. You can see how it will look in EDICT by looking at the "diffs" file for this day or the next in the diffs directory.

Current Entry方 [かた] /(n) (1) person/(suf) (2) way of doing/(P)/
Headword 1
Reading 1かた
Part-of-speechn
English 1(1) person
English 2(suf) (2) way of doing
CommentIt might be worth noting that when 方 is used to mean "person" it is considerably more polite and deferential than the "generic" 人. In sum, then, since we have "sens" markers, do we need "pol" markers -- or do we already have them?
NameDennis
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment Yes, there is a "pol" tag, which I have added now. Also extended the entry quite a lot.

CommentJim, it certainly seems to be primarily related to the BLEACH manga/anime/game(s).

Although it seems it is also finding some use with some ecchi images it seems. So it might become slang, but at this point it does not have a linguistic domain aside from BLEACH. Interesting to see the Chinese took it over verbatim. :)
NameJeroen Ruigrok van der Werven

Editorial Comment Yes, I noticed all the BLEACH references. I think I'll drop it.

CommentI came across it in compdic, except the reading in compdic's entry begins muru instead of the correct maru... (the entry in compdic should be corrected at least)

It seems general enough for edict (found for example if you go to a non-existing page on the japanese wikipedia), plus I added the version without 'ki' hiragana as found on wikipedia and revhenkan.

Editorial Comment COMPDIC entry amended too.

CommentI submitted this entry a couple of days ago, but I neglected to leave my name and email. I notice that it says "(NB: User-submitted entry, awaiting verification)". What kind of verification is required? I have attached a Japanese language link (one of the many available from a Google search of the term). Also, being part of the gay scene in Japan, I have had constant exposure to the word over the years I have been here. One other thing - I notice that the word doesn't come up when entered in hiragana. Is the "Reading of the headword in kana" not included in the search? For that reason I have also entered the hiragana as an Alternative headword, as I think it is written both ways.
NameDavid Stormer
Submission Typeamend
Editorial Comment The "NB: User-submitted ..." goes on automatically util the entry is rolled into the main database.
For an entry like ノンケ;のんけ, put both kana forms in as the "Headword" - as it says on the side panel: "Use this field if the word is written only in hiragana and/or katakana."
I don't understand the "word doesn't come up when entered in hiragana". In WWWJDIC the two kana forms are treated the same - searching for one will find the other.

CommentThis is a real estate word. I am not sure if I should include "(real estate)" or sth of the sort after each English meaning, or on the third line of English meaning(s).

Editorial Comment The uK is not really needed, except where there is a potential clash with another word/phrase with the same reading.

CommentIt might be kind of helpful to list the number of 偏 used in contemporary Japanese just as was done with 常用漢字 (1945). Btw, has anyone wondered whether the number 1945 has anything to do with the end of WWII? I dunno. Maybe I think too much.

CommentAre we on solid footing here with the inclusion of 単漢字? I don't find it in Yahoo, Google or Eijiro, although it is of course readily understandable as perhaps a 熟語. Is it part of "mainstream" speech or writing?
